I stretched, enjoying the lingering ache in my body for a few seconds before opening my eyes. The other side of the bed was cold, but I sensed Hunter was nearby. Even with all the uncertainty, a fragile sense of contentment settled in my chest.

Morning light spilt through the windows. I’d spent an entire day in bed showing Hunter how I felt. Whatever happened after the full moon, I wouldn’t regret it.

I could already feel the pull.

Many packs ran together under the full moon. Even my pack, before I left, would gather in the training fields to eat and drink until the moon reached its peak, and then run together until dawn. I’d always envied that bonding, even after I decided to suppress my wolf.

After a long shower, I stepped into the walkin closet and stopped short. I hadn’t opened it last time because I hadn’t bothered unpacking my rucksack. But now my eyes widened at the sheer size of it. Designer clothes lined the racks, every piece still tagged. I brushed my fingers over the fabric, instinctively comparing it to the carefully curated, conservative wardrobe at the castle. My mother would never have allowed this.

The drawers were filled with new underwear. Elegant pieces, trashy ones, all obscenely expensive. It reminded me of the outfit Nathan had made me wear in the ring. This was clearly his taste.

And they were all in my size.

Did he buy them for me?

I dismissed the thought immediately. I wasn’t that arrogant to assume that. For all I knew, this was where Nathan placed all his female guests before escorting them to his playroom.

I snorted and grabbed the cheapest dress. It was short, barely skimming the bottom of my ass. I imagined Hunter’s reaction, and heat curled low in my stomach. I shoved the dress back. Now wasn’t the time. We couldn’t afford to get distracted anymore. I needed to focus as much as Hunter did.

I settled on a kneelength light blue one that matched my eyes. I skipped the accessories and blowdrying; my new haircut was still low maintenance. I raked my fingers through it and returned to the bedroom.

The scroll case sat neatly on the nightstand, instead of on the floor where I’d thrown it. I hesitated, staring at the dented metal and the missing gems. I didn’t want to think about it, but I couldn’t delay any longer.

The facts were that dark magic was real. The murdered girls were real. I didn’t trust the Blackmores, but ignorance wouldn’t protect me from what was coming, even if it was someone’s scheme. I had to know what I was up against.

I grabbed the case up and left the room, slowing at the end of the hall when unfamiliar auras brushed my senses. Servants? At a time like this?

I descended carefully, scanning the house. Nathan’s magic still hummed through the walls, perhaps even a little stronger than when we’d arrived. It felt warmer, and I felt more protected. But something was wrong.

The auras I sensed didn’t seem right. It wasn’t just their fear, it was despair. Hopelessness. I thought it might have been Hunter, but our bond was steady and grounded.

Was it Nathan?

As I reached further, something cold skimmed my senses. Not like the slimy magic from before, this feeling was different. It

was alien.

Chapter 150

At the foot of the stairs, my gaze was drawn to an older couple near the door. They clung to each other, trembling so hard their clothes shook. My heart slammed against my chest as I hurried towards them.

What happened?

They startled like they hadn’t sensed me at all. The older man pulled the woman closer, but it was clear he was terrified as well. Did the coven find us, after all?

There’s nothing wrong. Your Majesty,he said, bowing.

I didn’t correct the title. There was obviously something not right.

We didn’t mean to disturb you,the woman whispered.

They were omegas. Their wolves cowered, retreating even from me. Understanding dawned on me, and I stepped back. With alphas and magic saturating the house, it was no wonder they were breaking. They didn’t feel safe.

Why don’t you find a room and rest?I suggested softly.

Yes. Your Majesty,they replied together.

Soft footsteps sounded behind me, and their fear spiked. The woman’s face paled, and she bit her lip so hard I caught the metallic scent of her blood in the air. Who had terrified them like this?

I turned. And froze.

68

All the strength drained from my limbs. My heart began to race as the newcomer approached. My wolf, stilled, teeth bared, on full alert.

Good morning.

April.

The girl from the castle. The witness who helped solve the serial killer case. The one sent to Lordswood Castle by the Lycan king himself.

My pulse roared.

Why was she here? To spy? Her smile was too bright, too fixed, stretching across her face as if it was forced. Even her gaze on me felt wrong. Focused in a way that made my skin prickle.

I looked at her, then back at the couple. They were the ones I’d sensed from upstairs. All three of them. Their auras were completely off.

I stepped back, my thoughts already racing. Three days before the prophecy said I would die, and the Lycan King’s people appeared. I didn’t believe in coincidences.

Good morning,I said evenly.

I’ll take my parents back to their room now,April said, bowing slightly before she turned her gaze to her parents.

They passed me stiffly, without another word. The man’s knuckles were white as he clenched the woman’s hand. I’d walked into something dangerous, that much was clear.

I had to tell Hunter.

I turned to follow, then stopped. Nathan stood in the doorway, watching the trio leave. Tension rolled off him before he even turned to look at me.
