HUNTER

“Prince Lordswood returned to Lordswood Castle. There was no confirmed contact with the Blackmore coven.”

I glanced back at Tanner and continued patrolling the perimeter.

“He knew we were going to be there. There was contact,” I said.

I was sure of that. It was the reason the coven had gone after Kitty instead of fighting with me at the barrier. My fists balled just thinking about it. I’d almost gone into a full rampage when Tanner gave me the report. How could anyone have such a death wish, knowingly going after my mate?

“It doesn’t matter,” I growled. “I’m going to get all of them.”

I looked back at the hazy barrier in front of me. Nathan’s magic was so potent that even the creatures that lived in this forest, beings soaked in ancient magic, didn’t venture too close. But I could sense them out there, just waiting. Watching.

The last time I’d run around aimlessly through the forest was when I followed the pull of my bond with Kitty. It had been hard to focus; the boundary’s magic had twisted reality and scattered my senses. Yet I’d always felt those creatures watching

Now I could pinpoint exactly where they were.

Even through these dense black trees, my senses were sharp enough to cut through any hallucinations. The boundary didn’t affect me anymore.

“Should we head back, sir?” Tanner whispered.

His emotions had heightened the moment we’d stepped too far from Rivers‘ house. I couldn’t blame the teams for not coming too close to the barrier when they knew what lurked beyond it.

“Yes.”

I’d already confirmed for myself that the coven was nowhere near us. I’d spent hours doing that, keeping busy while Kitty slept. While Rivers smirked after dropping his bombshell.

My fists balled again, and my beast snarled. My sanity was hanging by a thread. But I couldn’t act rashly now. I couldn’t do anything that would make Kitty believe I would fulfil the prophecy in a few days. Her anxiety was already gnawing at me, already twisting my gut.

“Keep monitoring all of the Lordswood communications, and I want to know where the fuck the coven is hiding.”

If it wasn’t for my need to keep my mate safe, I’d have been out there already, hunting. My beast was already prowling, teeth bared, already fantasising about the taste of their blood on my tongue. Three more days. And then I’d hunt those cowardly liars down myself.

Tanner’s heartbeat steadied as we got closer to Rivers’s house.

“Lordswood hasn’t returned to April’s house, either,” he said. “The other team wasn’t followed, so he shouldn’t know where they are. I’m not sure if he’s just retreated or we were too cautious to start with.”

No. There had to be a connection. I could still smell Kostas‘ desperation. He’d do anything to get his hands on Kitty in these last few days.

“Keep watching her house,” I said, stepping into the mansion.

I paused in the entry hall. The bond was intact, still steady, but something was off. I picked up Kitty’s scent easily among all the others, and cautiously followed it. That pine scent was tangled far too closely with it.

A growl rumbled in my chest before I could stop it.

Conversations from the agents resting in the rooms above me died instantly. Heartbeats raced. Fear flooded the air.

My fists clenched as I forced my emotions down. I breathed through my mouth and shoved the beast back down. I was a monster; that fact was indisputable. But if Rivers thought that meant I would turn on my mate, then he was a bigger fool than I’d imagined.

Kitty stuck her head around a doorway, and a smile curved her mouth. And just like that, my rage evaporated, and her warmth seeped into my bones, anchoring me.

“We’ve been waiting for you,” she said. “Come.”

She was radiant despite her anxiety. I followed her without hesitation, drawn to her as if she were the sun itself. She turned back into the room, and only then did her words register.

paused at the lounge doorway, and sure enough, met Rivers‘ gaze across the room. My beast slammed against his cage instantly, roaring for control. My hands twitched. I wanted to punch his smug fucking face in.

A face that looked more like Kostas’s the longer I stared.

I still couldn’t get my head around it, but the similarities were there. Those light brown eyes and brunette hair. It was why Rivers had befriended the prince. If this bastard grew his hair out, would it curl the same way? If his life hadn’t carved such sharp edges into him, would I have noticed sooner? Kostas had deteriorated in the three years Katerina was gone, but before that, they’d been nearly the same size. And their wolves were both jet black.

But that was where the similarities ended. They could almost be dismissed as a coincidence if you didn’t look too closely. Rivers masked his strength deliberately–no one would ever believe he was stronger than Kostas. But the wards alone were proof of it. Rivers had more power flowing in his veins.

He was the real threat.

My hands twitched again.

“We have a problem, Hunter,” Kitty said as she sat opposite Rivers.

My attention snapped to her. Any problem Kitty had was my problem, too. At least for now.

I walked into the room and sat beside her, taking her hand in mine as I searched her eyes and the bond. What had I missed?

“We have spies in the house,” she whispered.

I personally vetted my agents; they all knew the consequences of betraying me. But my trust had been shattered already. Which one of them had betrayed me? Tanner?

“Tell me who it is,” I said, my voice deadly calm, “and I’ll make sure they’re gone.” Permanently.

“April and her family,” she whispered again, glancing towards the doorway.

I frowned. April would never betray me. All she wanted was to survive and forget what Elijah had done to all her friends.

“I know it’s hard to believe, but you need to trust me,” Kitty said softly. “She’s the Lycan King’s person.”

Something crossed her face, something that cracked my chest open. Disgust? Hate? Fear?
