They were hiding something.

It was obvious on their faces; it was clear in the bond, unmistakable. They were deliberately keeping me in the dark about what was happening.

April’s mind was fried? Instead of explaining, Hunter grabbed the scroll case from the coffee table and said we needed to worry about what the coven was planning.

I grabbed the case from his hand, my irritation growing with each second. It was such an alien emotion when it came to Hunter. Even when I’d been terrified of him, I’d never felt this. But my family keeping things from me was why resentment had festered inside me in the first place. I didn’t want the same life with my mate.

But I could feel that resentment swirling in my chest.

My wolfHunter’s biggest cheerleaderhuffed and turned her back to me. Traitor. But I couldn’t let the bond decide this for me. Even as his mate, I had to set my boundaries.

I’ll open it, since this prophecy is about me,” I said. I’ll decide my own future.”

Hunter let out a breath. I felt the sting of my words ripple through the bond. But I’d spent a day showing him how I felt. I would have thought that he would understand that meant I would always choose him. I would always treat him with the respect he deserved, even if he weren’t my true mate.

So why did it feel like he didn’t trust me enough to do the same?

He’d said April and her family were omegas as if that alone was proof they were too weak or stupid to plan anything. As if power only ever flowed one way. Then where did that put me?

But I didn’t have time for a breakdown now. I had to stop the Lycan King from descending on us. The prophecy was obviously bullshit. The reason I would die was because of a blood feud, and nothing to do with the person I mated with.

I could have mated anyone, even this socalled true mate, but the Lycan King had been an enemy long before I was born. And then his son had taken up this hatred after karma finally caught up with the old king and burned him alive.

I took the scroll out. The paper was yellowed, and a fine dusting of golden dust fell from it as I unrolled it. Nathan had done something to suppress the magic on it when he grabbed it from the coven, but even after that, the air crackled with something ancient, something far beyond my understanding.

Set it on the table,Nathan said, the smirk gone from his face now. Just in case. And don’t read anything out loud. Some spells are easy to cast.

I almost dropped the scroll in my haste to comply, then knelt on the rug to read it properly, Hunter knelt beside me. He hadn’t said a word, but the hurt in his chest pressed against my own through the bond.

Are you sure it was safe for me to touch it?I asked, lifting my gaze to Nathan, only to see his eyes already locked on the scroll.

The tension between him and Hunter had multiplied since the le to the cabin. I could feel that Nathan was holding himself back from coming closer to me. Still trying to stay alive as he’d told me. But these were desperate times. We had to work together.

It’s safe,Nathan said. They hexed the case to make you comply, but the scroll itself is protected. Someone used powerful magic to preserve it over the years.

I understood then what the gold dust was. Even now, it swirled above the paper, never fully settling.

Chapter 152

Come closer,I said quietly. Read it with me. Tell me what you think.

Both men snapped their attention to me. The room went unnervingly quiet. Nathan’s heartbeat spiked; I heard it clearly in the stillness. But he was the magic expert. Hunter knew that. He wouldn’t have invited Nathan anywhere near me if it

weren’t true.

The quicker we solve this, the quicker we can go home.”

Pain sliced down the bond. And jealousy followed close behind. But I wasn’t trying to provoke the beast inside Hunter. Once we proved this prophecy was false, I would tell Hunter exactly what I thought of his power play.

This isn’t our home, Hunter,I reminded him. Let’s make sure we can live without looking over our shoulders first.”

The chaos in the bond eased, but Hunter wasn’t happy. He gave single nod to Nathan, as if granting permission. As if my consent hadn’t already been given.

That rubbed my nerves raw, but I let it go. I just wanted answers so I could plan my future once and for all.

Nathan moved to my other side, his pine scent filling my nose. His jaw was set, and his shoulders rigid, his gaze fixed on Hunter. He didn’t even look at me, and I understood why. We’d both seen the size of Hunter’s Lycan beast. We’d both seen how he’d ended his beta.

I focused back on the scroll. The handwriting was neat and precise, and the language was archaic. Words like thou, ye, and fate were woven into every line.

I read about how my parentsdestiny had been sealed before they bonded. True mates. One an alpha king, the other an omega. Blessed by the Goddess to bring peace and prosperity to their kingdom. The land would flourish, and the people would thrive.

And their fate was tied to me.

A daughter to be cherished. Protected. Sheltered from the world A daughter who would cement that peace as long as I lived. As long as I found my true mate.

But I wouldn’t.

After my first shift, I would find a chosen mate. The land would fot around me, and the pack would scatter. My parentswealth would slip away like sand through open fingers.

And on the first full moon, my chosen mate would pin me to a wall, my eyes gouged out, my insides torn free. And then darkness, long sealed away, would rise. Blood would run through the streets. Packs would perish. Even humans would not be spared. Disaster would strike in every corner of the world.

Magic long forbidden would reign.

I stopped reading to glance at Hunter. His jaw was locked tight, and rage rolled off him in suffocating waves.

I would never do that to you,he growled.

Unless commanded to.

I know,I whispered.

I reached for his hand, squeezing gently. But he felt the lie in my bravery and the terror clawing up my spine. I’d already seen blood in the streets once, and that memory still haunted m

But this bond between us, this bond we’d chosen, meant I accepted every part of him. Even the monster I’d seen that day. It clouded my mind.

Between the three of us, we would find a way to stop this. I only had to survive the full moon.

I forced my attention back to the scroll, my heart pounding, my eyes burning. The next section was about how to prevent this disaster.

If no true mate was found by the time I came of age, then only Ironclaw blood would save me. A beast who walked between worlds, long thought extinct. He would be the saviour of the world.

I shoved the scroll away and scrambled backwards. So this was why my brother believed I belonged to him. The reason he’d promised he’d always keep me safe. Because someone had fed him this prophecy since he was young.

The saviour of the world.

Hunter’s fury slammed into me through the bond. I looked up to find his chest heaving, his gaze locked on Nathan.

And Nathan didn’t even flinch. He met that murderous stare headon, his jaw clenched, and his eyes flashing gold.

Was this how it would start?

Another bloody scene. A prelude to the full moon.

For the first time since hearing the prophecy, doubt seeped into my bones.

What if it was true?
