You can’t fight a whole pack of Lycans,” Rivers said to her. “Kosis is hiding behind them. If it comes to it, I can call the helicopter and try to outfly the spell”
“You know that’s ridiculous,” Kiny snapped. “Who knows how log that magic would have chased us if we hadn’t blocked it? The wouldn’t best five minutes in the open air”
She was right. I caving would get her killed faster.
“We said this is the safest place, so this is where we’ll stay,” I growed before turning to the door.

Bat I couldn’t let Kiny night this alone.
By the time I reached the bottom of the stairs, the first thing I sa clenched as bile rose in my throat. We’d lost someone. Another arrogance
Tanner stepped out of the lounge and followed my gaze.
“It’s Ryker,” he said quietly

My chest ached. I’d trained every unit. Ryker had been one of the best. Loyal. Steady. Now his name would sit alongside all the others that I hadn’t protected.
“Who’s leading the mutiny at the gate?” I asked.
“Jasper and his people. We don’t know yet if they’re working with Kostas or acting alone,” he answered. “The rest of the pack is watching Waiting to see what happens”
My people were still loyal, but for how long!
My last conversation with my uncle after I’d got rid of one of his people surfaced. Tonight, with the full moon strengthening every wolf, he finally had the leverage he’d been waiting for
“They’re probably waiting for Kostas to breach the boundary fully Tanner added. “Once that happens, they’ll storm the grounds. I’m not sure we can hold out until morning”
April came down the stairs behind me. Her eyes were duller that before, but that smile was still there. Rivers had been right

her mind was a little damaged, and it was likely to stay that way how.
Another name added to my victim list.
“Alpha Sterling.” April said softly. “You haven’t changed your dresing. Should I bring the first aid kit?”
If my beast had been there, I would have felt the fracture in hermotions. The grief buried beneath the smile. If I hadn’t been so consumed by my bond with Kitty, maybe I could have helped her sooner.
Her parents stood on the landing, heads bowed, offering me respect out of habit even though my alpha aura was gone. Fear clung to them anyway.
I’d done this to them.
I loosened my fist and rested my hand briefly on April’s shoulde
“I’m fine,” I said. “It’s too dangerous down here. Take your parents back upstairs and stay there until this is over.”
“Yes, Alpha,” she whispered.
Kitty stood at the top of the stairs when April turned, her eyes sharp, her posture rigid, the moonlight amplifying every emotion she didn’t know how to hide yet.
If my beast were still with me, I would have directed my anger oto April, too, without thinking.
Rivers stood beside her, and his eyes blazed at me. The misunderstanding was my fault. I could clear it up by simply declaring who I was. But then Kitty would walk away, and I was no state to stop her.
“Come, April,” Rivers said, stepping in smoothly. “You’re not leaving your room again tonight.”
His tone was gentler than I’d ever heard it. He guided the omega without looking at Kitty. She glared after them, betrayal was written plain on her face.
When she came down the stairs, she was bristling until she saw the body bag. The rage drained out of her all at once. “We’ll take him away until we can give him a proper burial,” Tanner sai.
He was about to turn when he stopped mid-step. I could tell by the look on his face that he was mindlinking someone. After a moment, he turned to me, and pity flashed across his eyes.
“It’s your uncle,” he said. “He’s issued a challenge, under the pack laws.”
My whole body became heavy. I’d expected that, especially tonight when the full moon bolstered the whole pack.
“Tell him we will see him tomorrow,” Kitty growled.
A slight smirk curled my lips. She’d said ‘we’. She was still claiming me, even in my state. But the smirk disappeared just as quickly.
“You should head back upstairs,” I said. “My pack is still loyal. They’ll never let my uncle successfully challenge me.”
“You’re actually thinking of going out there?” she gasped, her eyes wide. “Hunter, Kostas’s magic has changed. It’s dark and twisted. The moment you open the door, you could end up like.
Her gaze drifted to the body bag.
My arm weighed a tonne as I raised my fingers to her face and traced her cheek.
“I was foolish to follow Kostas to Lordswood,” I said. “But this is my pack. My people. I know what I’m doing.”

“Kostas only wants one thing right now. You,” I said. “When he breached the wards, he could have slaughtered everyone. Instead, his spell only came after you.”
“But-”
I pulled her into my arms and inhaled. But there was no scent. My gaze landed on her neck, where my mark should have peeked out from her collar, and my chest twisted.
“Keep the pendant on you,” I said, my voice breaking as I pulled back. “You can protect me from the spell without leaving
the house.”
If there was any weight to this prophecy, then it would be Kostas or Jasper who would endanger her life. I could at least get rid of one of those threats.
I glanced back at Tanner.
“Drive me to the gate.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
Even without the beast, he was still willing to follow me. That realisation humbled me. I pressed my lips to Kitty’s and walked around her before I could change my mind. Being brave had never been an issue, but now I didn’t have the strength to back it up. My trust had been shattered by Elijah, but could I scrape enough of it to trust in my pack again?
Kitty didn’t follow us. When I passed the wards and stepped outside, something stirred in my chest again, and this time, I felt it sink into my flesh. My chest throbbed, and blood still stained my clothes. I smelled like death.
