Chapter 117

So, what’s your plan nowafter hearing Ashton Pierce’s explanation?

Zandrie’s voice was careful, measured, as he sat across from her.

He had only heard fragments of what happened earlierthe confrontation between Cassie and the two Knowles women. But by the time he stepped out, Cassie was already walking away, with Ashton following closely behind.

Whatever had happened, he knew it was serious. And so, he chose not to interfere.

Cassie had appeared calm these past few daysquiet, composed, almost detached. But Zandrie knew her too well to be fooled. The calm wasn’t peace. It was suppression.

More than once, he had caught her staring into space, her eyes unfocused, her mind clearly somewhere far away. Sometimes she would sit in silence for long stretches, unaware of her surroundings, as if she were slowly drowning in her own thoughts.

Maybe talking to Ashton had finally brought something to the surface. Maybe it had answered questions.

I don’t know, Drie.

Cassie let out a long, exhausted sigh, dragging her hands over her face as if trying to wipe away the confusion clouding her mind. When she finally leaned back, the torment in her expression was unmistakable.

She looked lost. Utterly lost.

How do you feel about his reasons?Zandrie asked gently.

He wasn’t trying to pryhe just wanted her to sort through the storm inside her.

Cassie groaned softly, her hands covering her face again as if the questions themselves were too heavy.

I don’t know, she admitted, her voice muffled behind her palms.

I’m confused. I don’t know what to thinkI don’t know what I’m supposed to feel. Her shoulders sagged.

Part of me is angry. Another part of me understands. And then there’s thisthis part of me that doesn’t even know if I have the right to feel anything at all.

Her fingers tightened slightly against her temples.

Everything he saidit makes sense. But at the same time, it doesn’t make it hurt any less.

She lowered her hands slowly, her eyes distant and heavy with exhaustion.

I justdon’t know where to put him in my life anymore.

Zandrie watched her in silence.

Every bit of her confusion was written plainly across her facethe hesitation, the conflict, the quiet ache she was trying so hard to contain. Cassie had endured more than most people ever realized. And now, even after all these years, the past still had its

claws in her.

Seeing her suffer over something that had already taken so much from her stirred something protective in him.

Maybe this timehe shouldn’t just stand by.

Do you want to have sex with me?

The question came out flat and unceremonious.

Cassie’s head snapped up so quickly her chair creaked. She stared at him as if he had suddenly grown another head.

What are you trying to do, Zandrie Wallace?she demanded, exasperation flashing through her confusion.

Zandrie remained completely unfazed. He simply shrugged and leaned back in his seat, crossing one ankle over his knee as if they were discussing office matters.

Well,he said casually, for years, I’ve been the man closest to you. So I thoughtmaybe somewhere along the way, we developed feelings beyond friendship. Beyond being colleagues.

Cassie continued to stare, trying to figure out whether he was serious or deliberately trying to provoke her.

Unbothered by her expression, he continued in the same calm, analytical tone.
