Bound By A Broken Night novel Chapter 227

Chapter 227

“You remind the of someone, the man murmured, his voice soff yet weighted with something unspoken as he watched Cass carefully select a ripe apple from the wooden basket.

Cassie stilled, the fruit resting lightly in her palm. She turned to face him.

A gentle smile formed on her lips as she met his gaze.

“Who might that be, sir?” she asked softly.

The man’s expression shifted, a faint, bittersweet smile appearing as his eyes grew distant.

“My younger sister,” he said. “She was… just as beautiful as you.”

The words lingered between them. Cassie’s grip on the apple tightened ever so slightly.

“Ahm… where is she now?” she asked, trying to keep her voice steady-but the slight tremor betrayed her.

For a moment, he didn’t answer. He exhaled deeply, and when he smiled again, it carried more pain than warmth.

“Someone told us…” he began, his voice faltering, “that she… died.”

He lowered his head, as if hiding the grief that still lingered in his eyes. Cassie stood frozen, her chest tightening, her thought spiraling in quiet turmoil.

“She was stubborn,” he continued after a while, forcing himself back into motion as he arranged the fruits in the basket

“But she had dreams-for all of us.”

His hands moved methodically, though his voice carried the weight of memory.

“That’s why she left for the city. She believed she could build a better life there… and once she did, she’d come back for us. Tak us with her.”

Cassie’s lips parted, but no words came.

“A few months after she left, she called,” he went on.

“Said she had found a job. She even sent us money.” A faint, fragile smile touched his face at the memory

“We thought… she really made it.” The smile slowly faded.

“But after that….” His hands stilled for just a second before continuing his task.

“She never called again.”

Silence stretched thin between them.

“Years passed,” he said quietly.

“And we never heard from her”

“Then… news of her passing reached us,” the man added softly after a long, unsteady breath

“But we were never told where she was where to find her”

He paused, his hands gripping the edge of the basket for a moment before forcing himself to continue

“I don’t even know if it’s true,” he admitted, his voice cracking just slightly

“And… if it is…” He drew in another deep breath, as though steadying himself against the weight of it

“I just want to see her grave,” he said, quieter now.
