“Dino, go rent Mr. Romero’s pickup truck,” he ordered, already pulling out the money.
“Use this for now.”
At the mention of that name, something in Cassie stirred an unease she couldn’t quite explain. She hadn’t even met the man, yet instinctively, she didn’t trust him.
“I have a vehicle,” she blurted out.
All eyes turned to her.
Only then did the two men seem to fully register her presence, surprise flashing across their faces–they hadn’t expected her to follow them.
“You don’t need to rent,” Cassie continued, stepping forward.
“It’s free. I’m heading back to the city anyway–we can take her and bring you straight to the hospital.”
She didn’t give them time to refuse.
“And we need to move now,” she added firmly.
“If you still go to Mr. Romero, it’ll only delay everything.”
As if on cue, the low hum of an engine cut through the tense air.
A sleek black vehicle pulled up just outside the infirmary, coming to a precise stop. Cassie glanced toward it, then back at them.
“My car is already here.” she smiled.
But the people inside the infirmary hesitated.
It wasn’t just the offer of help–it was free help. And in their world, nothing ever came without a price. Their unease deepened at the sight of the sleek, expensive vehicle waiting just outside, so out of place against the worn and fragile surroundings.
Two men stepped out of it and walked straight toward Cassie.
“Help them carry the patient, please,” Cassie said, her voice calm but firm.
The men obeyed immediately.
“Wait-” Eliseo hurried forward, raising a hand to stop them. The two men paused mid–motion.
“We don’t want to delay you, Miss,” he said, still unconvinced, his voice edged with caution.
Cassie met his gaze, steady and unwavering.
“Your wife’s condition cannot wait,” she said firmly.
“We have to go.” Without another word, she gave a small nod to the men.
They moved again. And just like that, the moment of hesitation broke.
୮
With no better choice – and no time left to argue – Eliseo and Dino followed in a daze as the men carefully lifted Celia and carried her out toward the waiting vehicle.
“Papa! Dino! What’s going on? Who are these people?!”
A woman came running toward them, breathless, her voice filled with alarm. Her eyes darted between the unfamiliar men and Cassie -until they landed on Cassie fully.

She froze. For a brief second, she simply stared.
“They’re taking Mama to the hospital in the city, Carmel,” Dino explained quickly, though it only seemed to confuse her more.
“I brought the money we saved,Carmel said, lifting a small bundle wrapped in cloth, her grip tight with urgency and fear.
“Let’s go,” Cassie cut in, not allowing the moment to stretch any longer.
“We’re losing time.”
There was no room left for debate.
Still uncertain, still overwhelmed, the three of them followed as Celia was carefully placed inside the vehicle. Carmel climbed in immediately, cradling her mother’s head, while Eliseo and Dino squeezed in from the other side.
Cassie slipped into the passenger seat without delay.
The moment the door shut, the vehicle surged forward, the engine roaring to life as it sped across the rough, uneven road.
“How about them?” Eliseo asked, glancing anxiously at the two men left behind.
“Don’t worry about them,” Cassie assured him, her voice steady.
Then she turned toward the driver.
“We need to get her to the nearest hospital that can handle her condition,” she said, her tone tightening—almost pleading.
“Get my phone,” Ashton said calmly, his focus never leaving the road as he expertly maneuvered through the narrow, rugged
path.
“Call Lia. Tell her we’re heading to Bay City Medical Center.”
“Bay City?” Carmel’s voice rose in panic.
“That’s too far–and we can’t afford treatment there”
