“And what exactly do I gain knowing you?” Mr. Romero said, letting out a short, mocking laugh.
“Will it make me invincible?”
Silence swallowed the room.
Then he snorted, the sound sharp and dismissive as a crooked smile tugged at his lips. Leaning forward slightly, he looked at Cassie as though she were nothing more than an inconvenience.
“I don’t have time to entertain strangers, Miss,” he added, shaking his head.
“I have more important matters to attend to. Perhaps… another time.”
The farmers watched quietly, exchanging uncertain glances. No one spoke. No one dared to. Their silence wasn’t agreement–it
was caution.
“Miss Cassie, please don’t mind him,” Carmel said softly, gently taking her arm.
“Come, you can sit-
Cassie didn’t move.
Her gaze lingered on Mr. Romero for a second longer before she turned to Carmel, offering her a small, reassuring smile.
Then-
“What if I told you… I personally know the Chairman of Malakai Group?” Her voice cut cleanly through the room.
She turned back to Mr. Romero, her words calm-but laced with unmistakable challenge. This time, he paused.
For a brief moment-just a flicker-something in his expression shifted. A tightening. A crack. But it vanished just as quickly.
“Tsk,” he clicked his tongue, waving it off.
“Keep imagining, Miss.” His smirk returned, wider now, more confident.
“The Chairman of Malakai Group doesn’t show herself publicly,” he continued, addressing the crowd as much as Cassie.
“Only those who have personally met her know who she is. She’s protected by powerful people-so powerful that you won’t even find proper information about her on television or the internet.”
The farmers nodded slowly, drawn back into his narrative.
“Only I,” he said, placing a hand on his chest, “and Mr. Warren Minerva have had the privilege of meeting her.”
The name hung in the air. Cassie didn’t react. Not outwardly.
“And as it happens,” Mr. Romero went on, a satisfied gleam in his eyes, “Mr. Minerva will be arriving shortly. He’ll confirm everything that this project has already been approved.”
His gaze slid pointedly toward Eliseo.
“And that the only reason it hasn’t moved forward… is because someone refuses to sell his land.”
The weight of his words pressed down on the older man.
“L… I have my reasons, Mr. Romero,” Eliseo murmured, his voice small, almost apologetic.
Cassie’s hands curled slightly at her sides. The restraint it took not to step in tightened in her chest.

She couldn’t believe it.
Malakai’s name.. her company’s purpose… twisted into something like this. A tool for manipulation. A lie used to strip people of what little they had left.”
Her gaze hardened as it returned to Mr. Romero. This wasn’t just deception. It was exploitation. And this time… it had reached her own family.
“Mr. Minerva has arrived!”
The announcement cut through the noise as a man hurried in, gesturing toward the entrance.
