Chapter 66
“After all these years?” she let out a soft, mocking chuckle.
“You think that’s possible?”
“Yes.” The answer came instantly, accompanied by a firm nod. No hesitation. No doubt.
“I was ready to step back, Cassie,” he continued, his gaze intent, unwavering.
“Like I said–I respected whatever relationship you had when you came back. When we met again, I didn’t interfere. I wouldn’t have disturbed your life.”
His jaw clenched, a muscle ticking at the side of his face.
“But a cheating husband?” he muttered darkly.
“That’s where I draw the line. I won’t stay still.”
“I’ll handle my marriage,” she snapped, irritation flaring.
“Don’t concern yourself with it.”
“He doesn’t deserve you. Divorce him, Cassie,” Ashton said, his voice rising, the words sounding dangerously close to an order.
Her eyes flashed. “You have no right to dictate my life.”
“I’m not dictating,” he shot back. “I’m protecting you, Cassidy.”
“I don’t need your protection,” she said stubbornly, glaring at him.
“Then let me show you,” he replied, his tone hardening with determination, “how a man should take care of the woman he loves. You can’t stay in a marriage built on betrayal.”
She scoffed, bitterness sharp in her laugh.
“I’ve been betrayed far worse than this. What difference does it make now?”
His eyes softened, but his resolve didn’t waver.
“Then let me redeem myself,” Ashton said quietly.
And this time, there was no anger in his voice–only a promise he looked ready to burn the world to keep.
Cassie said nothing.
The silence between them sharpened. Their gazes clashed–his burning with unwavering determination, hers cool and defiant, daring him to cross another line.
“I’ll show you,” Ashton said at last, breaking the standoff. His voice was steady, deliberate.

“What I failed to show you before.”
He took a slow step closer–not enough to touch, but close enough for his presence to press in on her
senses.
“I’ll do what I should have done back then,” he continued, every word weighted with resolve.
Cassie’s expression didn’t change, but something flickered in her eyes.
“I’ll make you feel cherished,” he said softly. Not commanded. Promised.
“So you’ll understand that there’s more to life than the marriage you’re clinging to right now.”
His gaze searched her face, as if trying to read every emotion she refused to give him.
“That there’s someone who sees you,” he added, voice lowering, roughened by honesty.
“Someone who won’t treat you like an obligation. Someone other than your cheating husband.”
The words lingered heavily in the air.
Cassie finally inhaled, slow and controlled, her fingers curling at her sides. She lifted her chin, meeting his stare head–on–unyielding, unbroken.
“You’re playing a dangerous game, Ashton,” she said quietly.
And he answered without hesitation, eyes never leaving hers.
“I know.”
“Just like I told you,” Ashton said quietly, his voice stripped of its edge, heavy with something raw.

“I’ll make you realize there are people who are dying to cherish you. People who never even had the
chance.”
He let out a long breath, as if the weight of those words had been sitting in his chest for years. Then, unexpectedly, he smiled–but it wasn’t triumphant. It was tired. Earnest.
“I’m not asking for much,” he continued, meeting her eyes again.
