I didn’t rush. I took my time, unwrapping cach gift slowly. It was almost embarrassing how well he knew me -my taste, my preferences, the things I’d never buy myself.
After the fourth box, I set the paper aside and leaned back into the couch.
“Daniel,” I said, “tonight was already… a lot.”
“I know.”
“And you still went and did all this?”
“I’m not trying to overwhelm you.” His voice softened. “I just wanted you to remember that outside all the chaos, you have this. You have me.”
My throat tightened in a way that annoyed me, because didn’t cry over sweet gestures. I barely cried over anything.
I took a slow breath and looked around again–the roses, the lighting, the music, the carefully chosen gifts.
“This must’ve cost you a fortune.”
“Amy, I’m not romancing you with regrets. Let me enjoy this.”
That pulled a laugh out of me. A genuine one.
He moved closer and wrapped an arm around my shoulders. I didn’t resist. I leaned into him because for once, I wanted to. The man had earned it.
“Thank you,” I muttered. “For everything. Even the unnecessary flowers.”
“They’re entirely necessary.”
“For who?”
He tapped my shoulder lightly. “For you. Because you pretend to hate romantic things, but you secretly melt.”
“I do not melt.”
“Sure,” he teased, kissing the side of my head. “Whatever helps you sleep.”
I hit his chest lightly, but I didn’t move away.
Minutes passed in silence. Not awkward–comfortable. The kind of stillness that settles into your bones.
Then he nudged me. “Do you want to open the rest?”
“Later. If I open everything now, you’ll get too proud of yourself.”
“I’m already proud of myself.”
I rolled my eyes, pushing myself off the couch. “Help me take the roses off the stairs before I slip and break

my neck.”
“They’re secured. You won’t fall.”
“You’re too confident in your decoration skills.”

He stood, grabbed my hand, and intertwined our fingers like it was the most normal habit in the world.
“Come on,” he said. “You’ve had a long night. Let’s get some rest.”
I let him lead me up the flower–lined staircase, still half shocked, half–grateful, and completely aware that after everything I’d dealt with–the lies, the attacks, the stress–walking into this house tonight felt like stepping into the one space that had never betrayed me.
And that wasn’t because of the roses or the gifts or the music.
It was because of him.
The night had been messy, dramatic, and exhausting… but the ending? The ending felt like mine.
My feet were already protesting from the gala heels, so the first thing I did was kick them off the moment we entered the bedroom.
He closed the door behind us. The soft lighting he always preferred at night was already on.
“You look tired,” he said.
“I feel like I aged three years in one evening.”
He walked over, pulled the blanket back, and motioned for me to get in. “Come here.”
It wasn’t an order; it was just him wanting to take care of me in the way only he knew how. I slipped under the covers, letting the mattress swallow me up. He joined me after changing into something comfortable.
He slid closer, wrapped an arm around my waist, and pulled me into his chest. That simple closeness. steadied everything inside me.
“You handled tonight well,” he said quietly.
“I handled Clara. The rest was easy.”
He laughed softly. “You always downplay your strength.
“I don’t downplay it. I just don’t waste time bragging about it.”
His hand moved along my back, slow and gentle. We lay there like that for a moment, breathing together.
Then he tilted my chin up and kissed me. The kiss reminded me why I trusted him in a world where trust
was rare.
I kissed him back.
After a while of kissing, I didn’t realize when I fell asleep
When morning came, sunlight filtered through the curtains, and something smelled good.

I blinked awake, groggy and comfortable. Daniel wasn’t next to me, which meant he was up to something. I stretched out lazily before sitting up.
A moment later, the door opened, and he walked in with a tray of breakfast. Eggs, fruit, coffee, and a few pastries he knew I liked.
He set it on my lap like he’d done it a thousand times.
“Morning,” he said.
“You’re spoiling me.”
“Yes.”
I snorted. “You’re not even denying it.”
“Why should I?” He leaned down, kissed my forehead, and sat beside me. “Eat.”
I picked up the coffee first. The moment the mug touched my lips, my phone buzzed on the nightstand. Then it buzzed again. And again.
Daniel frowned. “Who is blowing up your phone this early?”
“Probably some PR fallout from last night,” I muttered.
I grabbed it. Ten notifications. The most recent was an email with no sender name. Usually, I’d ignore something like that, but the subject line caught my attention:
