As the hours passed, updates from the pack started rolling in. Wolves were openly criticizing Mark. Some avoided him. Others refused to speak to him at all. The social shift had officially begun.

Cole checked in with me halfway through the afternoon. “Scouts say Mark’s household is restless. He’s been trying to get meetings with old allies. Most are ignoring him.”

I nodded. “Good. Keep watching.”

By evening, the building quieted. Daniel stayed in his own office handling Alpha matters. Bella had gone home. My guards remained outside my door.

I finally closed my laptop and allowed myself a breath. It wasn’t victory. Not yet. But the path was shaping cleanly.

Just as I stood to stretch, my tablet buzzed and a restricted message appeared.

Unknown sender. High–priority encryption.

I opened it.

A confidential document downloaded instantly.

At the top was the heading:

CONFIDENTIAL INTELLIGENCE REPORT

Subject: Mark

Activity: Attempted alliance with rogue faction.

My stomach tightened

not with fear, but with clarity.

So that was his next move.

Rogues didn’t care about laws. They didn’t care about the pack’s reputation. If Mark joined them, he could cause real damage.

I read the lines again, slower this time.

“Movement near the eastern border… intercepted messages suggesting outside involvement… possible link

to Mark…”

The message ended abruptly. I pushed my chair back and stood. “They’re hiding information,” I said to myself.

Daniel looked up from the couch across the room. “Who?”

“The scouts. Or whoever sent this.” I dropped the file onto my desk. “You don’t redact something this badly

He stood and walked toward me. “Or unless someone told them not to send the full thing.”

I shot him a look. “You think Mark has that kind of pull left?”

“You underestimate how stupidly loyal some wolves can be,” he said.

Daniel stepped behind me and placed a hand on my shoulder. “You’re tense,” he said quietly.

“Because something’s off,” I answered. “He shouldn’t be able to move pieces this openly.”

“Then we lock down the board.”

Right. Exactly what I intended to do.

I pushed away from the desk and walked to the corner cabinet, pulling out the encrypted tablet the scouts used for private reports.

Two messages were waiting.

One from Scout Hale:

“Movement on the north ridge. Unconfirmed who.”

Another from Scout Iden:

“Possible human transport entering rogue territory. No sign of Mark but the pattern fits previous activity.”

“I’ll call Hale,” I said. “He’s the only one who actually thinks before reporting.”

Daniel nodded. “Do it. I’ll stay with you.”

Hale picked up on the first ring. “Luna.”

“What exactly did you see?”

“A single figure moving fast. Not Mark. Smaller build. Could be a runner.”

“Male or female?”

“Couldn’t tell. They moved like they knew they were being watched.”

“Pattern?”

“Straight from the abandoned watchtower path. That’s a route Mark’s old team used.”

I leaned against the desk. “And you’re sure?”

“I’d stake my life on it.”

I ended the call. “It’s him,” I said.

Daniel folded his arms. “He’s poking at the borders to test how far he can push.”

“Not for long.”

He smirked. “I like the sound of that.”

Before I could reply, a loud voice carried through the open balcony doors.

“Amy Carter! You liar! You snake!”

Clara.

Of course it was Clara.

Daniel’s jaw tightened. “Do you want me to deal with her?”

“No.” I moved to the balcony. “I’ll deal with her by ignoring her.”

Clara stood in the pack square below, throwing her little tantrum. Her hair was wild, her face was flushed, and she was pointing at the packhouse as if she expected it to argue back.

“She framed Mark!” she shouted. “She trapped him! She manipulated everything, and the Elders are too blind to see it!”

Wolves gathered around her, unsure whether to watch, intervene, or walk away.

I stepped outside just enough for her to see me.

Her voice faltered when our eyes met.

I didn’t say a word. I didn’t acknowledge her. I just turned and walked back inside as if she was nothing more than background noise.

Daniel let out a slow breath. “You just made half the pack choose your side.”

“I know.”

“And the other half?”

“They’ll sway with the wind.”

He smiled. “Smart woman.”

“I will try.”

I grabbed my phone. “Bella. Where are you?”

“Behind the market stalls. Why?”

“I need you to meet me at the west office. Ten minutes.”

“On my way.”

“A trap.”

He stepped closer. “For Mark?”

“For whoever he’s sending.”

“Do you need backup?”

“No.”

His brow rose slightly higher.

I sighed. “Fine. You can come, but you stay quiet.”

He chuckled. “Can’t promise that.”

I rolled my eyes but didn’t argue.
