I arrived at Carter Holdings earlier than usual.

The hallways were quiet. Too quiet for a weekday morning. Most departments were still recovering from the fire, and several wings were under temporary lockdown. Even with the silence, my wolf paced inside me, alert and restless.
I swiped into my floor and stepped out of the elevator. As I walked toward my office, I heard typing–fast, panicked, irregular.
I paused at the doorway. Clara’s old assistant was at one of the corner desks, her back tense, shoulders hunched as she tried to wipe a computer clean.
She didn’t even hear me approach.
“What do you think you’re doing?” I asked.
She jumped so hard the mouse fell out of her hand. “Ms. Hayes–I mean, Ms. Carter–I didn’t think anyone would be here yet.”
“Clearly,” I said. “Why are you wiping that system?”
She swallowed hard. “Clara told me to sort out her files. I thought-”
“Clara is under supervised restriction,” I cut in. “She can’t give out tasks. Not without clearance. She doesn’t even work here. She hasn’t for a very long time.”
The woman’s eyes darted everywhere but at me. “I didn’t know. I just–she said it was urgent.”
“That’s not an answer,” I said. “Move aside.”
She hesitated. “Please… it’s not what
I stepped closer. “Then tell me what it is.”
think.”
Her hands shook. “Clara sent me a message last night. She said someone needed these files handled before audit day.”
Audit day. She said it so casually, as if she didn’t realize she’d slipped. Clara shouldn’t know anything about any internal audit. Only a handful of people did, and all of them were on Daniel’s vetted list.
I took the chair, pulled the computer toward me, and checked the activity logs. The assistant had been deleting entire chains of financial emails, most tied to of expense approvals–Clara’s, Mark’s, and a few from external vendors.
“Why these specifically?” I asked.
“I–I don’t know,” she said. “I just followed instructions.
I pulled up the device’s recent transfers. Her bank statements appeared on the screen. One line made everything still.
A private account deposited money into hers several times.

The sender name was masked, but the routing number was familiar. I opened a cross–check through the finance database. The account linked back to Mark’s shell branches.
My stomach tightened. “You’ve been paid by him.”
The woman’s face went pale. “I didn’t know it was from Mark. I didn’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I swear-” She pressed her hands together. “Please. I only did what Clara asked. She said it was part of cleaning her record.”
I kept scrolling.
Then I found something worse.
The funds didn’t originate from Mark–not directly. They passed through a company registered in the southern region. A corporation known for questionable trades. Illegal deals. Rogue connections.
I stared at the name for several seconds.
“What is this?” I whispered.
The assistant shook her head fast. “I don’t know. I don’t have anything to do with the south. I’ve never even been there.”
I didn’t answer her. I grabbed my phone and called Daniel immediately. He picked up on the first ring.
“Where are you?” he asked.
“On the executive floor,” I said. “I found Clara’s assistant wiping a computer. She’s been getting payments from one of Mark’s shell channels. But the money is coming from the south.”
There was a beat of silence on his end, the kind he only gave when something clicked in his mind.
“Stay where you are,” he said. “I’m on my way.”
Before I could tell him I was fine, the assistant stood up, eyes wide.
“I need to go,” she said suddenly.
“No, you don’t.”
“I didn’t sign up for this. If they find out I talked-”
“Sit down,” I said.
She bolted.
She didn’t even try to hide the panic. She sprinted toward the exit, but security had been on standby since the fire. Two guards intercepted her easily, blocking her way.
Stop!” I said, rushing after them.
The assistant trembled so hard her knees shook. Her eyes darted around like she expected someone to

jump out of the walls.
She wasn’t afraid of me.
She wasn’t afraid of getting caught.
She was afraid of whoever she thought was watching her
“Who are you scared of?” I asked.
She looked at me with tears slipping down her face. “Don’t make me say it.”
“Say it,” I pressed.
She kept shaking her head.
Before I could push her further, my phone buzzed. A new message popped up.
Stop digging.

My heart didn’t race, but everything in me went still. My wolf rose fast, ready for threat, scanning every noise around us.
The assistant saw the way I stared at the text and seemed to collapse inward. “This is why I didn’t want to be here,” she whispered. “They told me it wasn’t safe.”
“Who told you?” I asked again.
She only cried harder.
Security held her steady, but I signaled for them to ease up. “No one hurts her,” I said. “Not a word to anyone else yet.”
I slipped the phone into my pocket and headed for the elevator just as the doors opened.
Daniel stepped out, eyes sharp. One look at me and he knew something was wrong.
