Daniel and I thought we would settle, maybe breathe for a moment. Instead, the tension between us had been growing since last night, and I knew something was coming. I just didn’t expect it to happen this fast.

I walked into the living room and found Daniel standing near the floor–to–ceiling windows, staring at his phone. His jaw was tight. That was nothing new. What bothered me was the way he didn’t look up when I stepped in.

I stepped outside, got into my car, and drove off before he came after me.
