I woke up to the sound of drawers opening and closing

At first, I thought it was a dream. Then I opened my eyes and saw Mark standing by the wardrobe, already dressed halfway. His shirt was crisp.

His movements were focused. That alone told me he was going somewhere important.

“Where are you going?” I asked, my voice still rough from sleep.

He didn’t turn around. “Carter Holdings.”

That snapped me fully awake. I pushed myself up on the bed. “Why?”

He paused, then continued buttoning his shirt. “I’m trying to make things right with Amy.”

“Make things right?” I repeated. “How?”

He finally looked at me. His expression was tired, not angry. “By owning up. By apologizing. By doing what should have done earlier.”

I swung my legs off the bed. “I’ll come with you.”

He laughed once, sharp and humorless. “To do what? More damage?”

“No,” I said quickly. “I want to apologize too.”

That made him freeze.

He stared at me like I had just spoken a foreign language. “Since when do you apologize?”

I shrugged, keeping my tone even. “Since I realized what I did was wrong.”

He rolled his eyes. “Stop it. That doesn’t suit you.”

“I’m serious,” I said.

He shook his head. “You being serious sounds like a bad joke.”

I stood up. “Mark, listen to me. I want to say sorry. To Amy. To Daniel too, if I have to.”

He crossed his arms. “And you expect me to believe this sudden change of heart?”

“Yes,”

He studied my face, searching for something. “You’re a terrible actress when you pretend to be soft.”

I felt irritation rise, but I forced it down. “People can change.”

When we arrived, security stopped us immediately.

“We’re here to see Amy,” Mark said.

The guard checked his tablet. “You’re both restricted.”

Mark frowned. “There must be a mistake.”

“There isn’t,” the guard replied calmly.

Mark stepped closer. “Please. Just tell her we’re here.”

The guard hesitated, then nodded. “I’ll inform her.”

We waited in silence. People passed by, pretending not to stare. I could feel the weight of the building pressing down on me. Power lived here. Control. This was Amy’s ground now.

A few minutes later, the guard returned. “She approved. You can go up.”

Mark exhaled in relief. I felt something else–unease.

The elevator ride was quiet. When the doors opened, we were led to a familiar office. Amy was already standing when we walked in.

She didn’t smile.

She crossed her arms. “Haven’t you done enough damage already?”

Mark spoke first. “We’re not here to cause trouble.”

Amy looked at him, then at me. “That’s hard to believe.”

“We just want to apologize,” he said.

Amy let out a short laugh. “You can stop now. I won’t fall for this again.”

“I don’t know about Clara, Mark said quickly, “But I mean it. I’ve been honest with you. I’m sorry.”

“I know,” he replied. “But it’s a start.”

She turned to me then. Her eyes were sharp. Assessing. “And you?”

I swallowed. “I came to say I’m sorry.”

“For what?” she asked.

“For interfering” I said. “For making things worse.

She studied me for a long moment. “That’s vague.”

“I hurt you,” I said. “I know that now”

She shook her head slightly. “You always know after.”
