I wasn’t invited to see Elias.

I was summoned.

The message came through a secure line I hadn’t used in days. No greeting. No explanation. Just a location and a time, followed by a single line that told me everything I needed to know.

Don’t be late.

That alone told me this meeting would not be pleasant.

I left the house quietly, careful not to draw attention. Mark was distracted lately, watching me more than he thought I noticed. I didn’t give him a reason to question where I was going. I dressed simply, no effort to impress, no effort to hide either. Elias didn’t care about appearances. He cared about control.

The drive felt longer than usual. Elias’s driver didn’t speak, didn’t glance at me in the mirror. We passed through routes I hadn’t taken before, changed directions twice, and stopped at a building that looked inactive from the outside.

Inside, everything was clean and guarded.

Elias was already there when I was led into the room.

He stood by the window, hands behind his back. He didn’t turn when I entered. The door closed behind me with a quiet click.

“You took your time,” he said.

“I arrived when I was told to,” I replied.

He turned slowly. His face was calm, but there was no warmth in it. That was worse than shouting.

“Cole was caught,” he said.

“I know,” I answered. “I heard.”

“Then you know why you’re here.”

I met his gaze. “You think I had something to do with it.”

He stepped closer. “I think you were careless.”

“I wasn’t,” I said. “Cole was assigned to watch me. That wasn’t my decision.”

“That doesn’t change the outcome,” Elias said. “His capture caused damage. Not loud damage. Quiet damage. The kind that makes people nervous.”

“I didn’t expose him,” I said. “If anything, his presence was a risk to me.”

“No one is accusing you,” he said. “Not yet.”

That word landed hard.

Then why summon me like this?” I asked.

“Because I need you to understand something.” he said. “If Cole speaks your name, I will not stand beside you.”

I didn’t react. Not outwardly.

“You won’t fall with me,” I said.

“No.” Elias replied. “I won’t fall at all.”

Silence stretched between us.

“I’ve held up my end,” I said carefully. “Every move I’ve made has been calculated. I haven’t exposed you. I haven’t exposed the network.”

“And yet,” he said, “someone is watching more closely now.”

I folded my arms. “You’re testing me.”

“Yes.”

“At least you’re honest,” I said.

Elias turned back toward the table and picked up a file. He didn’t open it. He just tapped it once.

“Your usefulness has always depended on discretion,” he said. “That hasn’t changed. But time has.”

“Meaning?” I asked.

“You were valuable because you had access,” he said. “Now others are asking how much longer that access will last.”

I kept my voice steady. “You think I’m reaching my limit.”

“I think everything has an expiration,” Elias replied. “People included.”

I took a breath. “If you’re worried about Cole talking, then your problem isn’t me. It’s how well you contained him.”

Elias’s eyes flicked up. Sharp. Assessing.

“Careful,” he said.

“I am,” I replied. “That’s why I’m still standing.”

He moved to sit, finally opening the file. Papers slid across the table.

“These are internal adjustments,” he said. “Names being shifted. Responsibilities reassigned.”

I glanced down without touching them.

“And this concerns me how?” I asked.

“Because one of these names connects two of our interests,” Elias said.

I looked closer.

The name was unfamiliar at first glance. Then it clicked.

“You’re moving medical oversight,” I said.

“Yes.”

My pulse stayed steady, but my attention sharpened.

“That consultant,” I said slowly, “he’s tied to southern facilities.”

“And now,” Elias said, “he’s tied to us.”

I lifted my gaze. “Why are you telling me this?”

“Because I want to see what you do with the information,” he replied. “And because if you hear that name again. I need to know.”

“You think it matters to me.” I said.

“I think it should,” Elias answered. “That consultant is involved in high–risk cases. Special ones.”

I didn’t respond immediately.

“You’re watching me.” I said instead.

“Yes,” he agreed. “More than before.”

“And if I fail this test?” I asked.

Elias closed the file. “Then you walk alone.”

I let that sit.

“You brought me here to warn me,” I said. “And to remind me I’m replaceable.”

“Everyone is,” Elias said. “Including me.”

I gave a short nod. “Then we understand each other.”

He stood. “One more thing.”
