By the time they came for me again, I already knew the pattern.

It was never sudden. Never rushed. Someone would knock, polite and measured, and tell me I was needed for a briefing or a check.

They always said it like it was for my benefit. Like cooperation was something I should want, not something being taken from me piece by piece.

That morning, Mara helped me dress. She chose clothes that were loose around my waist and shoulders, soft fabrics that didn’t irritate my skin.

My body still felt weak, but it was no longer the sharp weakness from before. This was slower. Heavier. My wolf was quiet, resting, but alert.

“You don’t have to rush,” Mara said as she fastened the last button. “They’ll wait.”

“They always do,” I replied.

She looked at me for a moment, then lowered her voice. “Eat something when you come back.”

“I will.”

She didn’t look convinced, but she stepped aside anyway.

The room they took me to was smaller than the last meeting hall. Fewer seats. Fewer faces. That alone told me this mattered more. Authority here didn’t need an audience.

There were six of them. Two I recognized from previous briefings. One was the doctor who checked on me regularly.

The others were unfamiliar, but the way they stood and spoke to one another told me enough. Decisions passed through them before reaching anyone else.

I sat when they gestured.

“Thank you for coming, Amy,” one of them said. His tone was calm, practiced. “We’d like to move forward more efficiently.”

“I’ve been answering your questions,” I said.

“And we appreciate that,” another added quickly. “Which is why we believe deeper cooperation will benefit everyone.”

I folded my hands in my lap. “Define cooperation.”

The first man smiled slightly. “Transparency. Availability. Allowing us to monitor your condition more closely.”

“I’m already monitored,” I said. “I see a doctor. I take what you give me.”

“Yes,” the doctor said, clearing his throat. “But with your pregnancy progressing the way it is, additional oversight is necessary.”

“How additional?” I asked.

He glanced at the others before answering. “More frequent checks. Real–time vitals. Attendance at briefings related to… planning.”

I felt my jaw tighten. “Planning for what?”

“For your safety,” the first man said. “And the stability of what’s coming.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

Silence stretched for a moment. Not awkward. Calculated.

Another man spoke then, his voice lower. “Amy, you need to understand that your situation has changed. You are important. That means we must reduce uncertainty.”

“By watching me,” I said.

“By protecting you,” he corrected.

“Protection usually involves choice,” I replied.

His expression hardened, just a little. “And choice involves trust.”

I nodded slowly. “Then let’s be honest. What happens if I don’t cooperate the way you want?”

The doctor shifted in his seat. The first man answered. “Then we will proceed without your input.”

That was the answer. Clean. Direct.

I leaned back. “Ask your questions.”

They exchanged brief looks. One of them activated a tablet.

The questions came in layers. Some were harmless. How I was feeling. What symptoms had changed. When I slept. When my wolf surfaced. I answered those easily. Those truths didn’t cost Daniel anything.

Then came the sharper ones.

“How often does Daniel rely on instinct over council input?”

I paused. “You’d have to ask him.”

“Does he act alone under pressure?”

“He leads,” I said. “That’s not the same thing.”

“Has he ever hidden decisions from his allies?”

I met the speaker’s eyes. “All leaders compartmentalize.”

The tablet clicked softly as notes were taken.

They asked about the North. About loyalty. About who Daniel trusted most. I gave them structure without detail. Titles without names. Patterns without specifics.

After a while, the questions stopped.

“Thank you,” the first man said. “This level of cooperation helps.”

“I’m not done,” I replied.

He raised an eyebrow. “Go on.”

“You’re not all aligned,” I said calmly. “Some of you want me hidden. Some of you want me prepared. For what, I don’t know. But don’t pretend this is unified.”

The room went still.

“That’s an assumption,” one of them said.

“It’s an observation,” I corrected. “You don’t all ask the same kind of questions.”

The doctor looked down at his tablet.

The first man studied me for a long moment. “Your insight is noted.”

“Good,” I said. “Because I won’t play two roles at once. If you want something from me, be clear.”

He smiled again, thinner this time. “We will.”

The meeting ended shortly after. No confrontation. No resolution.

They took me straight to the medical wing.

The doctor moved efficiently, checking vitals, adjusting monitors. He spoke softly, almost kindly.

‘You’re handling this well,” he said.

‘I don’t have a choice,” I replied.

He hesitated, then nodded. “That’s fair.”

As he worked, another attendant updated records on a tablet near the bed. I wasn’t trying to look, but when you’re lying still long enough, your eyes wander.

I saw my name. My age. My condition.
