I had already reduced the circle as far as it would go.

That alone should have comforted me. It didn’t.

I sat in my office long before dawn, the building quiet except for the security team moving through their rotations. Carter Holdings never truly slept, but at that hour, it listened. Every sound carried weight. Every pause felt deliberate.

Amy was still missing.

Every decision I made was measured against that fact.

I pulled up the access logs again, even though I knew them by memory. Communications, approvals, restricted briefings. I had filtered the data so tightly that only six people remained with enough proximity to leak what they’d leaked. Six people I had trusted for years.

One of them was about to be tested.

I sent a secure message through an internal channel that only three of those six could see. The message was simple. It outlined a proposed shift in my strategy–one that didn’t exist.

I wrote it carefully. No operational details. No names. Just enough to suggest intent.

Then I waited.

Less than ten minutes later, my private line rang.

I didn’t answer right away. I watched the caller ID. I let it ring twice more than usual.

Finally, I picked up. “You’re calling early.”

“I needed to check something,” the voice said. Calm. Familiar. Too careful.

“About what?” I asked.

“The message you sent. About moving assets east.”

I leaned back in my chair. “That concerns you?”

“It changes the balance,” he said. “I thought we agreed to slow things down.”

“We agreed to adapt,” I replied. “Which part worried you?”

There was a pause. A real one.

“The timing,” he said finally. “It’s… fast.”

“Bring the last briefing files,” I told him. “The raw versions.”

“Now?” he asked.

“Yes.”

He arrived fifteen minutes later, looking tired and tense.

“You look like you haven’t slept,” he said as he set the files down.

“Neither have you,” I replied.

He didn’t deny it..

“I’m not asking you to,” I said. “I’m asking you to tell me who made you uncomfortable.”

He exhaled. “Two names. Neither said anything wrong. They just… asked too much.”

“About what?”

“Timing. Access. Why certain approvals were delayed.”

“Did you answer?”

“Carefully.”

That was the pattern again.

I nodded. “You did the right thing.”

He didn’t look convinced.

“Daniel,” he said quietly, “someone knows when you hesitate.”

That landed harder than anything else that morning.
