“Shape how?” I asked.

“That depends on your willingness,” Elias replied. “And your understanding of consequences.”

I folded my hands together to keep them steady. “Be specific.”

I closed the folder. “By doing what?”

Elias leaned back slightly. “By stepping away from her. Publicly. Permanently.”

I stared at him. “You want me to cut ties.”

“Yes.”

“That’s not influencing an outcome,” I said. “That’s burning a bridge.”

“Exactly,” he replied. “And bridges only burn once.”

I shook my head. “You’re asking me to isolate myself.”

“I’m asking you to prove where you stand,” he said. “Right now, you’re balanced between two sides. That’s useful for observation. It’s dangerous for action.”

I felt anger rise, sharp and unwelcome. “And if I refuse?”

Elias’s expression didn’t change. “Then you stay relevant for another few weeks. Maybe days. Then you become a liability.”

The guard by the wall shifted slightly. It wasn’t subtle.

“You said I was protected,” I said.

“I said you were valuable,” Elias replied. “Protection is conditional.”

Elias shook his head. “You don’t have it.”

“I’m not making this choice in five minutes,” I said.

“You are,” he replied evenly. “Because after today, there will be movement. And you will either move with it or be moved aside.”

I paced once, then stopped. “If I do this, I won’t be protected anymore. Not by you. Not by Daniel. Not by anyone.”

“That’s correct,” Elias said. “Protection creates dependency. Independence creates risk.“.

I turned to face him. “And you’re fine with that.”

“I’m fine with clarity,” he replied.

Silence stretched between us.

I thought about Amy. About the last conversation we’d had before everything fractured. About how careful she’d been with her words, even then.
