I decided to create a problem they couldn’t ignore.

Not a dangerous one. Not something that would put my life or the babies at risk. I stayed within what I knew my body could handle.

I had learned enough from the checks, the questions, the patterns. They watched numbers. They reacted to changes. They followed protocols more than people.

So I gave them a change.

It started with me refusing breakfast.

The nurse noticed right away. She was new, careful in the way people are when they know they’re being watched too.

“You need to eat,” she said softly. “Your levels were already borderline.”

“I’m nauseous,” I replied. “I can’t keep it down.”

She frowned and tapped something into her tablet. “You didn’t report nausea last night.”

“I didn’t have it last night.”

She hesitated. “Let me inform the doctor.”

She left the room faster than usual.

I stayed still, breathing slow. I didn’t exaggerate anything when they returned. I answered questions with short replies. I let my pulse run a little higher by sitting upright longer than needed.

When they took my blood pressure, I spoke while they measured. Small things. Enough to shift the readings without crossing a line.

The doctor arrived within twenty minutes. Not the one who usually checked on me. This one was older, sharper. He didn’t smile.

“What’s going on?” he asked.

“I feel off,” I said. “Lightheaded. My stomach hurts.”

He studied the monitor. “Your vitals are elevated.”

“I know,” I replied. “That’s why I said something.”

He nodded once and turned to the nurse. “Run the panel again. Full.”

She hesitated. “That requires authorization.”

She left.

“What happened?” she asked the doctor.

“Unstable how?” she asked.

“Elevated, but not critical.”

She frowned. “Why didn’t this escalate earlier?”

The doctor’s jaw tightened. “Because it didn’t meet the threshold.”

“Everything about her meets the threshold,” the woman said.

I kept my eyes closed. I listened.

“Who authorized the panel?” she asked.

“I did,” the doctor replied.

“You don’t have clearance for that level without approval,” she said.

He turned to face her. “Then revoke it. But I won’t ignore signs.”

Silence followed.

The woman stepped closer to my bed. “Amy, can you hear me?”

“Yes,” I said.

“Are you in pain?”

“Yes.”

“Severe?”

“No,” I replied. “But it’s different.”

She studied my face. “Different how?”

“I can’t explain it,” I said. “I just know something’s off.”

“This is unnecessary,” the woman said quietly. “We don’t need full oversight.”

“Yes, we do,” the man replied. “If this escalates, it becomes a liability.”

“That’s not your call,” she said.

“It is if the board gets involved,” he shot back.

Board. That word mattered.

The nurse returned with the results. She handed the tablet to the doctor. He scrolled, then paused.

“What?” the woman asked.

“There’s a deviation,” he said. “Not dangerous, but unexpected.”

The man stopped pacing. “Unexpected how?”

“The progression markers are advancing faster than projected,” the doctor replied.

The woman’s lips pressed together. “That’s not possible. We adjusted for that.”

“You adjusted estimates,” he said. “Not biology.”

The room changed after that.

More voices joined through devices. Instructions came in fragments. Some people spoke with certainty. Others asked for permission.

I paid attention to who answered whom.

The woman gave orders but still waited for confirmation. The man deferred upward immediately. The doctor didn’t wait at all.

That made him different.

“Move her to observation,” someone said through the device.

“No,” the doctor replied. “That will stress her further.”

“That’s protocol,” the voice insisted.

“And this is a medical decision,” he said.

The woman turned to him. “You’re crossing boundaries.”

“I didn’t ask for an audience,” I replied.

Her expression tightened. “You don’t get to choose the response.”

“No,” I agreed. “But I get to tell you how I feel.”

The man cleared his throat. “We should notify leadership.”

The woman shook her head. “Not yet.”

“Yes,” the man insisted. “Now.”

He sent the message before she could stop him.

That told me more than anything else.

The doctor leaned closer to me. “How are you feeling now?”

“Tired,” I said. “And still dizzy.”

He nodded. “I want you to rest. No movement for the next hour.”

The woman opened her mouth to object.

“I’ll take responsibility,” he added.

She closed it again.
