Chapter 464 Their Target

I had learned one rule in Elias’s world: if he invited you to talk, it meant he already knew more than he was saying. That was why I showed up early and left my phone behind. I brought a different one, clean, sealed, useless to anyone else.
He was already there when I entered the office. No greeting. No smile.
“You’ve been restless,” Elias said.
“I’ve been useful,” I replied.
“Those two things often look the same at first,” he said. He leaned back in his chair. “Sit.”
I did. Slowly. I kept my hands visible.
“You’ve asked about her three times this week,” he continued. “That’s new.”
“She matters,” I said.
“She mattered,” he corrected. “Past tense.”
I held his gaze. “If she didn’t matter, you wouldn’t still be moving her.”
That did it. Just a flicker. A pause that lasted half a second too long.
“You’re pushing,” he said.
“I’m paying attention,” I replied. “There’s a difference.”
He stood and walked toward the window. “The North is unstable. Daniel is acting without pattern. That puts everyone at risk.”
“You mean it puts you at risk,” I said.
He turned. “Careful.”
“I am careful,” I said. “That’s why I know you’re lying.”
Silence followed. Heavy, but not loud.
“You think you’re clever,” Elias said. “But clever people don’t survive long if they forget where they stand.”
“I know exactly where I stand,” I said. “That’s the problem.”
He stepped closer. Too close. I didn’t move.
“You’re not protected anymore, Clara,” he said. “You’re relevant. And relevance has a cost.”
“I’m aware,” I replied. “That’s why I’m here.”

He studied my face. “You want something.”
“I want proof,” I said. “Of where she is.”
“You won’t get it.”
“I already have,” I said. “I just need to confirm.”
His hand moved slightly. Not enough to reach a weapon. Enough to signal danger,
“You’re playing a dangerous game,” he said.
“So are you,” I answered. “And you’re losing control.”
He smiled then. Cold. “Leave.”
I stood. “You almost caught me,” I added.
“I know,” he said. “Next time, I won’t miss.”
I left before he could say anything else. My legs shook only once I was outside.
I didn’t go back to my apartment. I followed the pattern instead. Supply trucks. Shift changes. One building kept appearing where it shouldn’t. No markings. Too much security for a storage site.
I waited until night.
The guard at the side entrance barely looked at me. The badge worked. Elias’s people trusted their system too much.
Inside, the air was clean and quiet. Medical. I followed the sound of voices down a narrow hall.
I recognized Mara first.
Amy was sitting on the bed.
She looked thinner. Tired. Alive.
Relief hit hard, but I didn’t let it show. I stepped in and locked the door behind me.
Mara turned. “Who are you-”
I raised the gun.
“Don’t move,” I said. “Either of you.”
Amy’s eyes widened. “Clara?”
“I need you to listen,” I said. “Both of you. This isn’t personal.”
Mara lifted her hands. “She’s pregnant,” she said quickly. “You can’t—”

“I know,” I snapped. “And I won’t hurt her. But I will leave you here if you don’t cooperate.”
Amy stood slowly, “You’re shaking.”
“Not enough,” I said. “Sit back down.”
She did.
“What do you want?” Mara asked.
“We’re leaving,” I said. “Now.”
“That’s impossible,” Mara said. “There are guards-”
“I’ve timed them,” I said. “We have four minutes.”
Amy studied my face. “Why?”
“Because Elias is running out of patience,” I said. “And when that happens, people disappear.”
Mara swallowed. “They’ll kill us.”
“They’ll look for us first,” I said. “That buys time.”
Amy stood again. “If this is a trap—”
“It’s not,” I said. “I wouldn’t risk this if it was.”
She hesitated, then nodded. “Okay.”
Mara moved to block her. “Amy-”
“I’m going,” Amy said. “She’s right. This place isn’t safe.”
I lowered the gun slightly. “Keys,” I said to Mara.
She shook her head. “I don’t-”
“Now,” I said.
She handed them over.
We moved fast. No talking. The hallway stayed quiet. The exit door opened clean.
The car was waiting where I left it..
“Get in,” I said.
Mara climbed into the back seat. Amy took the front.
As I drove off, my hands finally steadied.
Elias hadn’t caught me.

Not yet.
But I knew he would come looking.
And when he did, nothing would go back to the way it was.
I didn’t take the main road. I turned twice before we hit the highway, then cut through an industrial stretch that stayed dark even at night. No cameras. No traffic. Elias liked control, but even he couldn’t watch every forgotten place.
Amy kept her hands folded in her lap. She didn’t speak, but her breathing was steady. Too steady. She was managing herself.
“You planned this,” she said finally.
