I received an alert just before dawn. It wasn’t a location. It was a disturbance report tied to a private access road that hadn’t been active in years.

No names attached. No official notice. Just movement where there wasn’t supposed to be any.

That alone was enough.

I pulled on a jacket and left without notifying the council. I didn’t trust the channel anymore. I barely trusted my own people. Every time I got close, the ground shifted. Someone always knew before I did.

By the time I reached the outer perimeter, the site was already quiet. Too quiet. No guards. No medical staff. No transport vehicles. Only the smell.

I stopped and closed my eyes.

She had been here.

Not long ago. Hours at most.

“Positions,” I said into the comm.

My team spread out without question. They were trained well enough not to celebrate early. They knew the pattern by now. Every time I thought I had her, I arrived just after she’d been moved.

I stepped inside the structure. It had been used recently, but wiped clean in a hurry. Beds stripped. Equipment removed. Power shut down without care. Whoever pulled out hadn’t planned to come back.

“Sir,” one of the men said. “No signs of a patient.”

“I know,” I replied.

I followed the corridor anyway. I didn’t need proof. The scent told me what had happened. Amy hadn’t escaped. She’d been taken. Again. And not gently.

I clenched my jaw and forced myself to stay calm.

“Check the vents,” I said. “Check the storage rooms. Don’t skip anything.”

They moved fast. Too fast. They wanted answers as badly as I did.

I found a discarded medical tag near a disposal bin. Not hers. Someone else’s. A decoy, maybe. Or a mistake. Either way, it meant she’d been close enough to matter.

Too close.

“Daniel,” Cole’s voice came through the comm, low and tense. “You need to see this.”

As they moved out, I stayed behind for a moment longer. I needed to be sure I wasn’t missing something obvious.

That had been my mistake before–assuming the enemy was reacting to me, when they were actually guiding me.

Someone wanted me here. Someone wanted me to see this place and arrive too late.

My comm buzzed again.

“Sir,” one of the trackers said. “Both trails go cold within five kilometers.”

I shut my eyes.

Of course they did.

I walked back outside and leaned against the wall, breathing slowly. Anger wouldn’t help. Panic wouldn’t help, What I needed was clarity.

Amy was still alive. I knew that now with certainty. They wouldn’t move her this carefully otherwise. They wouldn’t erase a site this thoroughly.

She mattered. More than before.

And that scared me.

I opened a private channel. One only three people had access to.

“She was here,” I said. “Recently.”

A pause. Then, “You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

Another pause. Too long.

“Then they’re accelerating,” the voice said. “Whatever plan they had, it’s moved forward.”

“I know,” I replied. “That’s why I’m shutting this channel down after this call.”

“What?”

“I can’t keep chasing shadows,” I said. “Someone is shaping my moves before I make them.”

“You’ll be alone.”

I cut the channel.

By the time my team returned, there was nothing new to report. No witnesses. No signals. No mistakes left behind.

Just absence.

I ordered a withdrawal. As we left, I looked back once more at the building. It had never been meant to hold her for long. It had only been a stop.

A test.

As we drove away, my comm lit up again. A new message. No sender ID.

She was moved under emergency clearance. Internal authorization. Not Southern command.

I stared at the screen.

That narrowed the field.

Not enough to act. But enough to confirm what I’d feared for days.

The enemy wasn’t just watching me.

They were walking beside me, close enough to breathe the same air.

And Amy was still out there, being moved faster than I could follow.

Another dead end.

But I was done stopping at them.

Next time, I wouldn’t arrive after she was gone.

Next time, I would already be waiting.

I didn’t head back to base. That was the first decision I made after leaving the site. Going back would mean reports, questions, and eyes watching my face for reactions. I wasn’t ready to give anyone that.

I rerouted the convoy and dismissed half the team along the way. Officially, it was to reduce visibility. In truth, I needed fewer people hearing what I was about to say.
