Bound To The Broken Alpha
Chapter 476 Making Mistakes
DANIEL
I didn’t sleep much the night the confirmation came.

Not because of fear. Not because of exhaustion. But because my mind would not stop running through possibilities that refused to settle into anything useful.
The message didn’t come through official channels. It wasn’t stamped, signed, or verified by any council authority. That alone told me it was real. Anything clean enough to look official had already been compromised.
I read it twice before I allowed myself to believe it.
Amy was alive.
Not hidden behind maybes. Not buried under speculation. Alive.
And pregnant.
I sat at the edge of my bed with my phone in my hand, staring at the screen long after it went dark. My wolf paced inside me, restless but restrained. He wasn’t raging. He wasn’t howling. He was alert in a way that told me this wasn’t a moment for reckless action.
I didn’t wake anyone. Not Cole. Not the council. Not even the aides who thought they knew what I was doing.
I went to the office before sunrise.
The building was quiet, the kind of quiet that made every footstep sound louder than it should. I poured myself coffee I didn’t drink and opened the secure terminal.
Medical transfers. Logistics. Supply routes.
I didn’t search for Amy directly. I searched for pressure points.
Someone had sent me that information for a reason. Not to comfort me. Not to warn me. To provoke me,
“Who benefits?” I muttered to myself.
The screen filled with data. Southern financial networks. Shell organizations tied to health initiatives. Foundations that claimed neutrality but moved resources with too much precision to be accidental.
A knock came at the door.
“Come in,” I said without looking up.
Cole stepped inside, his expression serious. “You’re up early.”
“I didn’t go to bed,” I said.

He nodded once. “I figured.”
I turned the screen slightly so he could see. “This came in last night.”
He read it carefully. I watched his jaw tighten.
“They’re escalating,” he said.
“Yes,” I replied. “But they’re also signaling.”
“Signaling what?”
“That they think I’m still reacting,” I said. “That I’ll rush in.”
Cole folded his arms. “Won’t you?”
I met his eyes. “Not the way they expect.”
He exhaled. “What’s the plan?”
“There isn’t one yet,” I said. “There’s a direction.”
I pulled up a separate file. “I want you to trace every medical shipment that’s been rerouted through southern territory in the last six months. Focus on anything labeled as emergency care or research.”
“That’s a lot of ground,” he said.
“I know.”
“And you’re not involving the council?”
“No.”
He hesitated. “Daniel-”
“They’re compromised,” I said. “Or watched. Either way, they’re slow.”
Cole studied me for a long moment. “You’re cutting yourself off.“”
“I’m narrowing the noise,” I said.
He nodded. “Alright. I’m in.”
Hours passed in fragments. Calls that went unanswered. Contacts who suddenly claimed ignorance. Accounts that had been active a week ago going silent.
By midday, it was clear this wasn’t a simple concealment.
Someone wasn’t just hiding Amy.
They were managing awareness.
A junior analyst I trusted knocked quietly and slipped into the room.

“Sir,” she said, lowering her voice. “One of our southern–linked partners just froze cooperation. No explanation.”
“Which one?” I asked.
She told me the name.
I felt it settle into place.
“They’re watching reaction,” I said.
She frowned. “Reaction to what?”
“To me,” I said.
After she left, Cole leaned back in his chair. “They want you isolated.”
“Yes,” I said. “And loud.”

He tilted his head. “Then don’t give them either.”
I almost smiled.
That afternoon, I released controlled misinformation. Nothing dramatic. Just enough to suggest I was shifting resources north, reinforcing borders, preparing for confrontation.
The response was immediate.
Accounts shifted. Assets moved. One southern contact cut communication entirely.
“Too fast,” Cole said quietly.
“They’re not guessing,” I replied. “They’re monitoring.”
“From where?”
I shook my head. “That’s the problem.”
Later that evening, I stood alone in my office, staring out at the city lights. Somewhere out there, Amy was being measured, discussed, prepared.
Not as my wife.
As a variable.
My phone buzzed once.
A single message. No sender ID.
She is stable. But time is no longer neutral.
I deleted it immediately.

They wanted me anxious. Off–balance. Making mistakes.
Instead, I made a decision.
If they were shaping my moves ahead of me, then I needed a path they didn’t know existed.
I shut down the terminal and reached for my jacket.
Tomorrow, I would stop chasing shadows.
Tomorrow, I would start building a way in that didn’t ask permission.
And when I moved again, it wouldn’t be as a desperate man searching for his wife.
It would be as an Alpha who understood the board had changed–and was ready to change it back.
I didn’t leave the building right away.
I sat back down, pulled up a blank secure file, and started listing names. Not suspects. Not enemies. Everyone who had access to fragments of my movements over the past month. Every aide, every analyst, every ally who didn’t need full clearance but had brushed close enough to matter.
The list was shorter than it should have been.
Cole stepped closer, glancing at the screen. “You’re narrowing it again.”
“Yes,” I said. “And this time I’m not announcing it.”
He leaned against the desk. “What do you want from me?”
“For now?” I replied. “Nothing visible. Keep doing what you’re doing. Act normal. Let them think I’m still chasing the same trails.”
“And you?”
“I’m stepping sideways,” I said. “Not forward. Not back.”
He studied my face. “You think Amy knows?”
I paused. The question landed harder than I expected.
“I don’t know what she’s been told,” I said honestly. “But I know she’s being prepared for something that doesn’t include my consent.”
Cole nodded once. “Then we’re already late.”
“Yes,” I said. “Which means we stop trying to be careful.”
I closed the file, locked the terminal, and stood. “We move quietly. And when we move again, it won’t look
like a rescue.”
He raised an eyebrow. “What will it look like?”

I picked up my coat. “Like I’m walking away.”
