The tip didn’t come through official channels. That alone made me take it seriously.
I was in the lower command room with Cole when my secure line vibrated once. No name. No location tag. Just a time stamp and a single line asking if I was alone. I didn’t answer
immediately. I waited three minutes, then stepped into the adjacent room and closed the door.
I replied with one word.
Yes.
The response came fast.
Clara and Elias had a fallout. Not staged. Witnessed. Access revoked. She walked.
I read it twice.
Fallouts happened all the time. Power shifted. People realigned. That wasn’t news. Wh followed was.
There is proof. Not suspicion. She coordinated logistics that led to the abduction. She facilitated medical transfer windows. She was the bridge.
My chest tightened, but my hands stayed steady. I typed slowly.
Send it.
The data packet took thirty seconds to download. That told me it was heavy. When it opened, I knew why.
Time–stamped communications. Internal clearances signed under Clara’s authority. Cross- verified movement logs that matched the day Amy disappeared. Not guesses. Not theory. Correlation and confirmation layered together.
I sat down.
One document showed a transport approval that shouldn’t have gone through. It bypassed standard oversight. The override code traced back to Clara’s access tier, elevated weeks before the abduction. Another showed medical coordination requests routed through a neutral intermediary. That intermediary linked back to Southern–controlled assets.
My jaw tightened.

I opened an audio file next. Clara’s voice came through clean and calm.
“She needs to be moved before the window closes. The North will hesitate. We won’t.”
I closed my eyes briefly, then opened …em again. I forced myself to keep listening.

Another voice responded. Older. Male. Identified later in the metadata as a Southern Alpha liaison.
“And Daniel?”
“He’ll look everywhere else first,” Clara said. “He trusts structure. We’ll use that.”
I stopped the playback.
For a long moment, I just sat there. Not because I didn’t understand, but because understanding changed everything.
I walked back into the main room. Cole looked up immediately.
“You look like someone died,” he said.
“Close the door,” I replied.
He did. “What is it?”
“I got confirmation,” I said. “Not rumor. Not inference.”
“About Amy?” he asked.
“About Clara.”
He stiffened. “What about her?”
“She wasn’t caught in this,” I said. “She built it.”
Cole shook his head once. “That doesn’t make sense.”
“It does when you stop assuming motive was personal,” I said. “She wasn’t acting alone. She aligned with the South.”
He stared at me. “You’re saying she worked with the Southern Alpha.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”

“At least since before Amy vanished,” I said. “Possibly longer.”
Cole ran a hand over his face. “She helped us. She fed us intel.”
“She fed us what she wanted us to chase, I said. “Everything else she diverted.”
He leaned back against the table. “You’re sure?”
I turned the tablet toward him and let him see the files.
He went quiet as he scrolled.
“This is clean,” he said after a minute. “Too clean.”
“Because it wasn’t rushed,” I replied. “It was planned.”
Cole looked up. “And the fallout with Elias?”
“Recent,” I said. “She outlived her usefulness.”
“So Elias cuts her loose,” Cole said. “She cuts him off. Everyone burns.”
“Except the South,” I said.
Cole exhaled slowly. “She knew you’d come apart if you found out.”
“I didn’t,” I said.
He met my eyes. “You’re holding it in.”
“Yes,” I said. “Because emotion won’t help Amy.”
Silence settled between us.
“What now?” Cole asked.

“Now I assume every move she made was intentional,” I said. “Every door she opened. Every delay. Every misdirection.”
“And Elias?” he asked.
“Elias was a partner until he became a liability,” I said. “That’s how Clara operates.”
Cole frowned. “You sound like you’ve thought about this before.”
“I have,” I said. “I just didn’t want to be right.”

I pulled up another file. This one showed encrypted transfers between Clara’s accounts and Southern shell channels. Not direct payment. Resource support. Safe passage. Medical access.
“They didn’t just take Amy,” I said. “They sed her.”
“For leverage?” Cole asked.
“For control,” I replied. “Over me. Over the North.”
Cole’s voice dropped. “And Clara positioned herself where?”
“As indispensable,” I said. “Until she wasn’t.”
My secure line vibrated again.
She’s isolated now. No formal protection. Elias cut her off completely.
I stared at the message.
“She’s exposed,” Cole said.
“Yes,” I replied. “But that doesn’t make her harmless.”
“She’ll run,” he said.
“Or she’ll strike,” I said. “She doesn’t survive by disappearing.”
I thought of Amy. Every delay. Every dead end. Every moment I’d been one step behind.
“This was never about kidnapping alone,” I said. “It was about destabilizing me without making it obvious.”
