Daniel stood again and leaned down, pressing a light kiss to my forehead.

“Get some rest,” he said. “You’re not as fine as you pretend.”

“I’m fine enough,” I replied. “And Daniel?”

He paused.

“Don’t warn anyone,” I said. “Let them think this is just a party.”

His eyes hardened with understanding.

“Alright,” he said. “Let’s see who accepts the invitation.”

His jaw tightened. “She accepted the invitation.”

That didn’t surprise me.

I had insisted on it. Elias too. And the Southern Alpha. A welcome party was harmless on the surface. No one would question the guest list. No one would suspect it was a test.

The night of the event arrived quietly.

Music played low. Guests filtered in with polite smiles and careful eyes. Wolves from allied packs, council observers, business partners. Everyone behaved. Everyone watched.

I stood beside Daniel at the entrance for the first hour, greeting people, thanking them, answering the same questions about my health with practiced ease.

I turned back to the room just as Daniel’s hand brushed my arm–a subtle signal.

No raised voices. No chaos. Two guards positioned themselves behind Clara as she spoke to a council delegate. Another cut off her exit. When she turned, confusion flashed across her face.

“What is this?” she asked.

“Clara,” Daniel said clearly, his voice carrying just enough to draw attention, “you’re being detained for questioning under Northern authority.”

The room froze.

“What?” she laughed sharply. “This is a joke.”

One of the guards stepped forward. “Please come with us.”

Clara’s gaze snapped to me.

“You knew,” she said.
