The pregnancy was already taking more from her than she admitted. I could see it in the way she slept longer, in the way her hands sometimes rested over her stomach without her noticing.

I left her room quietly and headed to the security wing.

Clara’s detention had done exactly what we hoped it would. Elias had gone silent. Too silent. The Southern Alpha, on the other hand, had begun sending feelers through third parties. No direct calls. That told me everything.

Cole was already waiting in the briefing room. He stood with his arms crossed, eyes on the

“She hasn’t broken,” he said.

“She wasn’t supposed to,” I replied.

“She’s calm. Too calm.”

“Clara is always calm when she thinks she still has options,” I said. “The question is whether she actually does.”

I looked at the live feed from the holding cell. Clara sat on the bench, posture straight, expression neutral. No pacing. No signs of distress. Anyone else would have mistaken it for confidence.

“She knows she’s bait,” Cole said.

“Yes.”

“And she’s fine with it.”

I returned to her room later that evening.

She was awake, propped up with cushions, reading through reports she pretended not to understand fully. I knew better.

“You should be resting,” I said.

“I am resting,” she replied. “I’m just not unconscious.”

I sat beside her and took her legs gently, starting the massage the doctor recommended. She relaxed after a moment, her shoulders easing.

“Anything new?” she asked.

“Clara is still holding,” I said. “Elias hasn’t moved.”

“That means he’s watching,” Amy said.

“Yes.”

She was quiet for a few seconds. “Then the plan stands.”
