Chapter 487 Letting It Play Out

DANIEL

The compound was loud again.

That was how I knew things were shifting back into place. Noise meant movement. Movement meant people believed the danger had passed, or at least that it was contained. I didn’t believe either, but belief wasn’t required to keep the machine running.

Amy was still resting. The doctor had insisted on another day of limited movement, and for once I listened without arguing. She had gone through enough. The pregnancy was already taking more from her than she admitted. I could see it in the way she slept longer, in the way her hands sometimes rested over her stomach without her noticing.

I left her room quietly and headed to the security wing.

Clara’s detention had done exactly what we hoped it would. Elias had gone silent. Too silent. The Southern Alpha, on the other hand, had begun sending feelers through third parties. No direct calls. No official messages. Just people suddenly interested in trade routes, border patrol schedules, and ceremonial attendance.

That told me everything.

Cole was already waiting in the briefing room. He stood with his arms crossed, eyes on the

screen.

She hasn’t broken,he said.

She wasn’t supposed to,” I replied.

She’s calm. Too calm.

Clara is always calm when she thinks she still has options,I said. The question is whether she actually does.

I looked at the live feed from the holding cell. Clara sat on the bench, posture straight, expression neutral. No pacing. No signs of distress. Anyone else would have mistaken it for confidence.

She knows she’s bait,Cole said.

Yes.”

And she’s fine with it.

That’s what worries me,I said.

We moved on to the next screen. External surveillance. Border movement. Elias’s last confirmed location was still the same. No attempts to reach out. No attempts to extract Clara.

He’s either smarter than we think,Cole said, or colder.”

Both can be true,I said.

I dismissed him and stayed behind. There were decisions to make, and they were not the kind that benefitted from an audience.

Amy’s idea of the welcome event had been solid. Public enough to draw attention. Controlled enough to limit damage. The World Compact preparations had already brought key figures into the North. A celebration for Amy’s return gave us cover to invite everyone without raising suspicion.

Including Elias.

Including the Southern Alpha.

And including Clara, once she was moved under escort.

The risk was obvious. Putting all the fractures in one place always was. But keeping them apart only delayed the break. Amy understood that. It was one of the reasons she scared people.

I returned to her room later that evening.

She was awake, propped up with cushions, reading through reports she pretended not to understand fully. I knew better.

You should be resting,I said.

I am resting,” she replied. I’m just not unconscious.

I sat beside her and took her legs gently, starting the massage the doctor recommended. She relaxed after a moment, her shoulders easing.

Anything new?she asked.

Clara is still holding,I said. Elias hasn’t moved.

That means he’s watching,” Amy said.

Yes.

She was quiet for a few seconds. Then the plan stands.”

It does,” I agreed.

Good, she said. Fear makes people sloppy. Waiting makes them reveal themselves.

I looked at her. You’re sure you’re up for this?

She met my eyes. I didn’t survive everything just to hide now.

I didn’t argue. There was no point.

The next days were consumed by preparation. Invitations were sent. Security layers doubled. Movement inside the compound was restricted without explanation. People noticed. They always did. Rumors spread, but none of them landed on the truth.

The welcome event was announced publicly. A celebration of Amy’s return. A sign of unity. A signal that the North was stable again.

Responses came in fast.

The Southern Alpha accepted within hours.

Elias waited two days, then confirmed.

That was when I knew he would make a move.

Clara was informed of the event the night before.

I watched through the feed as the guard delivered the message. Her expression didn’t change, but her eyes sharpened.

They want me there, she said calmly.

You’ll be escorted,” the guard replied.

Of course,” Clara said. I wouldn’t expect otherwise.

She sat back after he left, fingers tapping once against her knee before going still again.

She’s calculating,Cole said beside me.

She never stopped,I replied.

The day of the event arrived with perfect order. Too perfect. Every position filled. Every corridor manned. Every exit was covered. It was the kind of control that only existed before something went wrong.

Guests arrived in waves. Polite smiles. Careful words. Old alliances pretending nothing had cracked.

Elias arrived alone.

That alone told me plenty.

The Southern Alpha came later, surrounded by guards, his presence loud even when he said nothing.

Amy entered last.

The room shifted when she did. Not because she demanded it, but because people noticed when someone who had nearly been erased stood upright again. She leaned slightly on my arm, but her steps were steady.

Applause followed. Polite. Measured. Respectful.
