Being in this cell should have felt like punishment, but I refused to let it. I studied everything- the guards‘ movements, the timing of their rounds, the way their eyes flickered whenever a superior passed.
Every detail became information, and information was power. Sitting on the narrow cot, I counted the seconds between the door sliding open and the footsteps reaching the end of the corridor. I noted which cameras tilted slower, which corners were blind spots.
“Another day in paradise,” I muttered under my breath, voice low so the guards couldn’t hear.
A guard opened the door a few minutes later with food. “Here. Eat before it gets cold,” he said, placing the tray on the metal table.
“Thank you,” I said, tilting my head as I examined him. “You don’t look convinced this is necessary.”
He hesitated. “What do you mean?”
“I mean, you seem like you think someone higher up should be doing this, not you.” I let a faint smile tug at my lips. “Don’t worry. I won’t report you.”
He blinked and shuffled his feet. “Uh… right. Carry on.” He left quickly, glancing at the corridor like he expected someone else to appear. I noted his hesitation. Small cracks in loyalty were opportunities if you paid attention.
Later, I overheard two guards arguing quietly outside my cell.
“You’re going too fast,” one said.
“And we’re falling behind if we wait,” the other replied sharply.
I leaned toward the door, listening closely. “Oh? Falling behind… in what?” I asked softly, loud enough for the first guard to hear.
He froze. “Nothing,” he said, glancing around.
“Really? You two should be careful. Mistakes have consequences.” My tone was calm, casual, but it carried weight. I could see the flicker of unease in their expressions. I didn’t threaten; I just reminded them that I knew enough to make things inconvenient.
That evening, a new guard came to check on me. “Cell inspection,” he said, walking slowly, looking down the hallway.

I leaned back against the wall. “Inspection for what? Anything unusual you’d lik about?”
He stopped, hesitation in his eyes. “Just protocol.”
“Protocol,” I repeated. “Funny how some people follow it strictly, while others… a suits them.” I let the words hang. I could see the doubt flicker in him, just as I inte
