The city lights were dimming as the last of the guests filtered out from the welcome party. The celebration had been quiet but warm–friends, allies, and a few hesitant pack members mingled, making polite conversation while still glancing my way.
Daniel had been by my side almost the entire evening, helping me navigate the room, gently supporting me whenever the weight of the crowd grew heavy. Weeks had passed since my rescue, and my body was slowly adjusting to the pregnancy. I wasn’t entirely strong yet, but I was finally able to walk without wincing too often, and for that, I was grateful.
“Feels almost normal, doesn’t it?” Daniel murmured beside me, his hand brushing lightly over mine. I gave him a small smile, appreciating the way he kept his voice low in the bustling room.
“Almost,” I said. “But I can’t forget everything. Clara… Elias… and that Southern Alpha. I still feel like the calm is temporary.”
He nodded, understanding the worry in my voice. “The calm is real for now. Let’s focus on that We can deal with everything else later.”
The subtle sound of footsteps drew my attention to the far side of the room. A figure approached, dressed in formal attire with an air of cautious authority. Daniel stiffened slightly and whispered, “That must be him–the Southern Alpha’s representative.”
I watched him carefully. He stopped a few feet away, bowing his head slightly. His eyes met mine, respectful but guarded. “Good evening,” he said smoothly. “I am here on behalf of the Southern Alpha.
I wish to make it clear–he had no involvement in your… unfortunate abduction. His representative’s presence is intended to demonstrate goodwill and offer peace.”
I studied him, my mind running through every possible angle. “Peace?” I asked carefully. “After everything that’s happened, that’s a lot to ask me to accept without proof.”
“I understand,” he said. “But my task is not to convince you. It is to communicate that the Southern Alpha desires stability. He wishes for the territories to remain united, and for no further conflict to arise from this incident. He distances himself entirely from your kidnapping”
Daniel’s hand tightened over mine slightly. “Do you trust him?” I asked quietly, looking to Daniel for guidance as much as for confirmation of my own instincts.
He shook his head subtly. “Not yet. But we listen. We weigh his words. That’s all we can do right
now.”

The representative nodded. “I will not speak further unless invited. My presence is to show intent, nothing more. Decisions, of course, remain yours.” He stepped back slightly, maintaining his distance but keeping his posture formal and unyielding.
I took a breath, trying to steady the mixture of relief and skepticism rising in me. “Thank you,” I said finally, my voice firm but neutral. “We will consider your message.”
Daniel squeezed my hand, and together, we observed as he quietly exited the room. Even in his absence, I felt the weight of what had just been said—the Southern Alpha, at least officially, claiming no part in my kidnapping. I wasn’t naive; the timing of this peace offering felt strategic, almost too convenient, but I couldn’t dismiss it outright.
Once the crowd thinned and the formalities ended, Daniel and I lingered near the center of the hall. “What’s your take?” I asked, my voice low.
“We verify everything we can,” he said. “But for now… we proceed carefully. Treat it as a neutral gesture, not a guarantee.”
I nodded, feeling the uneasy balance between relief and lingering suspicion. Weeks of recovery and careful planning had brought us to this moment, but I knew the landscape could shift at any time. All I could do was stay alert, trust Daniel, and continue preparing for whatever might
come next.
As the evening ended, we walked out into the night together. The air was cool against my skin, and the quiet city felt calm, almost deceptively so. I knew the Southern Alpha’s intentions weren’t entirely clear, and I couldn’t afford to lower my guard. But for the first time in weeks, I allowed myself a small sense of normalcy–one fleeting, cautious step back into the world I’d almost lost.
The representative’s words lingered in my mind as we headed toward the car. “No
involvement… peace… intent.” I repeated them silently, turning them over like puzzle pieces I hadn’t yet fully figured out. For now, I would take them at face value–but I wasn’t blind. I knew appearances could be deceiving.
Daniel’s hand remained over mine as we moved, a quiet reassurance amidst the uncertainty. “We’ll handle it,” he said firmly. “Every piece, every angle. Nothing goes unchecked.”
I believed him. For now, that was enough.

The walk back to the car was tense, every step measured. My body was still weak, and the pregnancy made even small movements exhausting. I leaned slightly on Daniel, grateful for his quiet strength. “How did it feel, seeing him?” I asked, my voice low.
Daniel glanced at me, frowning slightly. “It was… cautious. Too much formality for my liking.
