CLARA
The cell stayed the same every day.

Same light. Same walls. Same measured quiet that never fully settled because there was always a guard shifting weight outside or a door opening somewhere down the corridor.
I sat on the edge of the bed when the door panel slid open that morning. Two guards entered, both familiar, both careful. No weapons drawn. That told me this was not a transfer.
“Stand,” one of them said.
I did. I had learned early that resistance here achieved nothing. They checked my scanned my vitals, and confirmed identity. All routine. All recorded.
“You’re being moved for receiving,” the second guard said.
“I know,” I replied.
He paused, then nodded. “Walk.”
wrists,
The corridor lights reflected off polished floors. This level had been rebuilt after the old conflicts, meant to look neutral. No symbols. No colors tied to any pack or council. Neutrality was a lie people told themselves to feel clean.
They escorted me into a small holding chamber attached to the larger hall. I could hear voices through the wall. Papers moving. Chairs shifting. The trial machinery warming up.
I was not allowed into the main chamber yet. That would come later. This was still about structure. About making sure every step followed the rules they claimed separated them from tyrants.
A steward entered, older, hair pulled back tight.
“Clara,” she said. “You understand why you’re here today.”
“Yes,” I said.
“This is a formal receiving of your acknowledgment,” she continued. “You are not required to speak beyond confirming understanding.”
“I understand,” I repeated.
She studied my face, maybe searching for cracks. She would not find any. I had stopped

She activated a recorder. “You are charged under council law for conspiracy, coordination with
a foreign Alpha power, facilitation of kidnapping, and internal destabilization. Do you acknowledge receipt of these charges?”
“I do,” I said.
“Do you contest the council’s authority to bring these charges?”
“No,” I said.
That was true. Contesting authority was pointless. Authority did not disappear when challenged. It hardened.
She nodded and ended the recording. “You will be returned to holding,” she said. “Your legal representative will be assigned within forty–eight hours.”
“I won’t need one,” I said.
Her eyes flicked up. “Everyone needs one.”
“I know how this ends,” I said.
She did not respond to that. She simply turned and left.
On the walk back, I replayed everything I had heard through the wall. Names. Dates. Words carefully chosen to avoid admitting fear. They were afraid. Not of me. Of what I knew.
Back in the cell, I sat again on the bed. I folded my hands. I breathed.
This was not the first time I had been isolated. Power did not always look like command rooms and followers. Sometimes it looked like waiting while others moved around you.
Daniel had come the day before. His voice still lingered in my head. Calm. Controlled. Disappointed, but not enough to matter.
He thought this was over.
It wasn’t.
Hours later, another visitor arrived. Not a guard. Not a steward. A council liaison.
“Clara,” he said through the barrier. “You’ve been granted limited communication privileges.”
I raised an eyebrow. “How generous.”

“You may submit a written statement for record,” he said. “It will not be shared publicly.”
“For now,” I said.

He didn’t deny it.
They brought a tablet. Restricted network. Everything monitored. I smiled to myself as I began to type.
I did not deny the charges. That would be boring. Instead, I detailed my version of events. Carefully. Truth threaded with omission. I wrote about threats. About conversations taken out of context. About how power structures forced people into corners and then punished them for choosing a way out.
I named no one directly. I did not need to.
When I finished, I handed the tablet back. The liaison scanned it, then nodded once.
“This will be entered,” he said.
“Of course it will,” I replied.
After he left, the silence returned.
I lay back and stared at the ceiling. I counted breaths. I counted steps outside. I counted time by guard rotations.
That night, I dreamed of nothing.
The next day brought noise.
Voices down the corridor. Orders given sharper than usual. A shift in posture from the guards. Something was moving.
When the door opened, I sat up straight.
“Clara,” the guard said. “You’re being informed of an update.”
“About?” I asked.
“Your associates,” he said.
I waited.
“Several individuals connected to you are now under investigation,” he continued. “Some have been detained for questioning.”

I smiled.
He frowned. “This amuses you?”
“It confirms something,” I said.
“What?”
“That they’re afraid of what spreads,” I said.
He shut the door without responding.

Later that day, I was allowed a brief walk in the secured corridor. No contact. No windows. But movement mattered. It reminded the body it still existed.
