I sat in the second tier, not as a speaker, not as a judge. Just a witness with influence, which was the most dangerous position to be in. People watched me without staring. I pretended not to notice.

Amy wasn’t with me. She was still resting, monitored, cleared for short walks but not long sessions like this. I didn’t argue. I had already pushed enough.

A council clerk approached and leaned down. “The preliminary phase will extend longer than projected,” she said quietly. “There are… complications.”

“Define complications,” I said.

“Overlapping jurisdictions,” she replied. “Foreign interests. Internal negligence.”

I nodded. That meant they were uncovering more than they expected. Clara hadn’t worked alone. Everyone knew that. Proving it was another matter.

Across the chamber, I saw Elias’s seat. Empty. Officially, he was cooperating from a distance. Unofficially, he was avoiding visibility. That alone told me how deep his exposure might be.

The Southern Alpha’s representative arrived late.

He moved with care, dressed neutral, face calm. Not a warrior. Not a politician either. More like a negotiator trained to survive rooms where people smiled before they cut you.

He took his assigned seat and waited. No rush. That irritated half the council.

When the session paused for a recess, I stood and crossed the floor. He noticed me immediately.

“Daniel,” he said, standing. “You look well.”

“I’m alive,” I replied. “That’s enough.”

“I believe the South benefits from confusion,” I said. “Whether you ordered it or not is almost irrelevant.”

His jaw tightened slightly. “You’re escalating toward a broader conflict.”

“No,” I said. “You are responding late to one you underestimated.”

He studied me. “Clara’s trial complicates things.”

“It clarifies them,” I said. “For the first time, everyone sees internal betrayal as a real threat, not

a rumor.”

“And you,” he said. “What do they see when they look at you now?”

I didn’t answer right away. “Someone who didn’t stay quiet,” I said finally.

“That makes you unstable in their eyes,” he said.

“It makes me honest,” I replied.

He smiled thinly. “Those two things rarely align.”

The recess ended. We returned to our seats.

The next segment focused on procedural expansion. More witnesses. More records. More time. Exactly what Clara would want. The longer this dragged, the more exposed everyone became.

My comm unit vibrated once. A secure channel.

I stepped out into the corridor before answering.

“They’re digging,” he said. “Deeper than before. Finance routes. Internal messages. Old favors.”

“Any names?” I asked.

After the session adjourned, I went straight to Amy.

She was sitting near the window in her recovery room, a blanket over her legs, reading reports she pretended not to care about. She looked up when I entered.

“You stayed longer than planned,” she said.

“They’re stalling,” I replied, sitting beside her. I reached for her leg and began the massage the doctor insisted helped circulation. She relaxed slightly.

“Clara?” she asked.

“Still silent,” I said. “Still in holding.”

“She wants this slow,” Amy said.

“Yes,” I agreed. “She wants people scared of what comes out next.”

Amy nodded. “They should be.”

I looked at her. “You’re calm.”

“I don’t have the energy to be anything else,” she said. “And fear doesn’t help the baby.”

I squeezed her calf gently. “The Southern Alpha sent a representative.”

“I know,” she said. “I felt it shift.”

“They deny involvement,” I said.

“They would,” she replied. “That doesn’t mean they’re lying. It just means they didn’t sign the order.”

I leaned back. “You’re still protecting nuance.”
