Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 10

Chapter 10 Let’s Get a Divorce

Bethan spent two days at her parents’ place.

She glanced at the calendar. Great. Rainy spring weather was here to stay.

When she left her building, the streets were still wet from the heavy rain earlier.

The heavy rain had washed all the color from the world, leaving everything dull and gray. The trees looked faded, their leaves a murky green. Dark clouds blocked out the sun.

The air was thick and humid, so heavy it felt like her heart was drowning.

Bethan deliberately waited until Monday morning, after Hugh left for the office, to go back and pack her stuff.

Even though he was the one who cheated, she couldn’t look at him anymore.

It didn’t matter if she yelled or stayed quiet-nothing was going to change.

Better to just leave and preserve what little dignity they had left

Back at the home where she had lived for three years, Pethan went straight upstairs.

The bedroom looked exactly as she had left it that day.

The soup bowl Hugh had placed on the nightstand was still there, and the blanket she had tossed aside remained in a messy heap.

Hugh hadn’t been staying here while she was gone.

Just the thought of Hugh and Megan spending the nights together sent a sharp pain through her heart.

Bethan walked into the cloakroom and took out a suitcase.

She picked a few of her regular clothes and some undergarments.

Before she married Hugh, the Olsen family had gone bankrupt. For the past three years, she had been dependent on Hugh. Nothing in this house was bought with her own money.

Her eyes landed on a white graffiti T-shirt, and she froze.

She reached out and pulled it off the hanger.

She and Hugh had bought matching shirts that summer after they got married. She’d surprised him by flying out to the city where he was on a business trip and convinced him to go shopping with her.

An art student had hand-painted the design.

She remembered the student asking what she wanted. She’d kissed Hugh, then told the artist with a grin, “My husband’s so handsome-you better make me look prettier, or I won’t match him.”

After her shirt was done, Hugh said he had something to do and refused to wait any longer.

So his shirt remained pure white, without any graffiti.

Bethan opened Hugh’s wardrobe and took out the plain white T-shirt from the bottom drawer. She threw it into the trash along with hers.

In three years, no matter how much she cajoled or begged, Hugh had never worn it.

Bethan stood there in a daze for a while and then called in several cleaners.

She had them thoroughly clean the over 6,000-square-foot duplex, getting rid of every trace of herself.

One of the cleaners couldn’t help asking, “Mrs. Cavill, are you really going to throw away these wedding photos?”

Bethan simply replied, “Yes.”

Towards evening, Bethan paid the cleaners and asked them to take the trash away.

Looking at the clean and spacious room, she felt a bit more at ease.

She placed the suitcase at the entrance and sent Hugh a message.

When Hugh saw the message from Bethan, he didn’t reply right away.

Now that she’d calmed down and come back, he figured they could just move past it.

Jacob came in and said, “Mr. Cavill, the car is ready.”

“Cancel tonight’s dinner,” Hugh said.

Jacob nodded, not daring to ask questions.

Interesting. Hugh hadn’t bothered looking for his wife when she’d been missing for days-just had Jacob camp out at the hospital. But the second Bethan came back, he canceled everything and rushed home.
