Chapter 106 As Long as You’re Willing

Just as she was about to lie down and rest, her phone rang. It was a female colleague from the neighboring apartment, asking if she was home and letting her know that someone was waiting for her at the door.
Bethan sat quietly at the edge of her bed for a long moment before getting up to open the door.
The entire building was occupied by her colleagues from the hospital. At such a late hour, she couldn’t disturb their rest. Besides, she had done nothing wrong. Avoiding the problem wouldn’t make it go away.
Bethan drew in a deep breath, opened the door, and found herself facing Hugh. Their eyes met in silence after so long apart.
The Bethan who used to be lively, clingy, and
always chattering whenever she saw him now stood uncharacteristically quiet inside the doorway.
While the Hugh who used to be distant, reserved, and 0:11 indifferent whenever he saw her now stood outside

One of them stood inside the apartment, the other just outside. The doorframe separated them, yet also tied them together in a moment too fragile to name.
“Happy birthday,” Hugh said quietly.
Bethan’s gaze slowly drifted downward, settling on the cake in his hand. Following her eyes, he glanced at the cake as well.
Instantly, flashes of beaches, cruise ships, flowers, blueberry cake, and Instagram posts filled with cheesy love captions rushed through her mind. Her chest clenched painfully, and her complexion turned ghostly pale.
“It’s your favorite matcha cake,” Hugh said softly. “I brought it all the way from New York just for you.”
Bethan suddenly pointed to the hallway, her expression turning blank. “Take the cake out of here!”
Hugh’s brows knitted slightly as he stepped through the doorway.
Béthan lost control the moment he stepped in. She 20:11

Hugh set the cake down and pulled the door shut behind him. He caught her wrist, his gaze fixed on her, and
asked, “I flew overnight to be here for your birthday, and this is the way you treat me?”
Bethan’s eyes stayed locked on the cake sitting on the coffee table, her emotions spiraling out of control.
She tried to hurl the cake away like crazy, but Hugh forced her into his arms and refused to let go. Their struggle teetered on the edge of breaking point.
Bethan fought against him, her voice trembling with rage. “I don’t need you to spend another birthday with me in this lifetime, and I will never eat a cake you bring me!”
Hugh tightened his grip on the back of her neck, forcing her to meet his stare. “Bethan, we are husband and wife, not enemies. How long are you going to fight me like this?”
Bethan’s eyes were red, tears clinging to the corners. With a face set in grim resolve, she spat out, “From the moment you secretly baked that blueberry cake and gave it to the woman you truly love, there has been no place for me as your wife. Stop pretending otherwise! 20:11

His voice was low and hoarse in Bethan’s ear. “From
the moment I decided to marry you, I was ready to walk this path with you to the end. You are my wife, and you always will be.” He ran a soothing hand along her back. “I brought you a birthday present. Want to see it?”
Just as Hugh freed one hand to reach for the gift, Bethan
seized the chance to break free from his hold.
She stepped back, her expression unyielding, her distance plain. “Hugh, whether it’s gifts or people, I only want what is pure, one of a kind, and mine alone. Anything connected to you disgusts me!”
Hugh’s hand froze halfway in his pocket before he slowly withdrew it empty. He stood in front of Bethan, staring at her without moving, the silence stretching between them for a long while.
Finally, he asked, “Tell me, what will it take for you to move past this?”
Bethan stepped back again, her voice clipped and deliberate. “The lies you told me. That blueberry cake. Your public declarations of love on Instagram. The woman you could never let go of. Your illegitimate child! 1
