Chapter 107 One of Them Have to Give in
But Bethan shoved him away, her emotions snapping. “The lawyer I hired has already submitted all the evidence. of your affair to the court. If you fail to appear at next week’s hearing, I will make sure you see exactly what I’m like when I truly fight back.”
Hugh frowned. “You gathered evidence?”
Bethan replied, “If you agree to a divorce settlement, then none of that evidence will matter.”
They locked eyes, the atmosphere frozen between them.
Hugh set the birthday cake outside the door, closed it behind him, and spoke in a negotiating tone, “There. I already got rid of the cake. Can we sit down and talk?”
Bethan turned her head expressionlessly. “There’s nothing to talk about. Leave.”
Hugh stared at her in silence, his expression clouded with qonflict. He lifted his hand to brush her hair aside, but:11 she shoved him away in disgust.

his arms. No matter how she struggled, he held her tightly.
When he felt the sharpness of her frame, the evidence of all the weight she had dropped, Hugh was overwhelmed by a sorrow he couldn’t let go of.
His voice was hoarse yet uncharacteristically gentle as he murmured, “Everyone has a past, Bethan. Megan is mine, and that child, too. You don’t need to keep clinging to my
past.”
Unable to break free, Bethan bit down on Hugh’s
shoulder, and then pain shot through him. Though his grip loosened slightly, he still refused to release her.
Her fingers dug into the edge of Hugh’s suit jacket until her knuckles turned white. Fighting to keep her emotions in check, she said, “You betrayed me in this marriage for that woman and her child. That’s the present. You promised to take care of them for life. That’s the future.
“It’s not me refusing to let go of your past. It’s you who have carried Megan and her child through your past, your present, and even your future.”

Hugh tried to explain, “Taking care of Megan and her child doesn’t mean I want to give up on this marriage, or
on you.
“When she came back, I may have handled some things poorly, but it’s not what you think between her and me.”
Bethan’s face was numb as she looked straight at Hugh. “You said it yourself, Hugh. The woman you wanted to marry was Megan. You don’t love me. Since you don’t love me, then let me go!”
Hugh’s face darkened further as he asked, “Is love really that important to you?”
Bethan found Hugh’s question laughable, and the look she gave him dripped with sarcasm.
She said, “Hugh, you held on to Megan for years with everything in you. If anyone knows how much love matters, it’s you.”
Hugh let go of Bethan and tugged irritably at his collar. “I didn’t wait for Megan. Meeting her again just happened
naturally.”

On one hand, running into her after so long did stir something inside Hugh. On the other, she was sick and struggling with depression, and he had wanted to calm her down.
That fleeting surge of emotion wasn’t enough to make him lose control or make the wrong choice. The Instagram post he agreed to put up for Megan stayed online for only sixty seconds before he deleted it.
What Hugh hadn’t expected was that in those sixty seconds, Gwen happened to see it, screenshot it, and send it straight to Bethan.
He acknowledged the child only because he didn’t want his grandfather to target Megan and her son again like he had six years ago. He had promised her that he would never reveal the boy’s parentage.
But Bethan couldn’t accept Megan, let alone the child.
Hugh knew without question that between him and Bethan, one of them would have to give in. If they kept pushing against each other, it would only end in mutual destruction. 4/5
