Chapter 108 Happy Twenty-sixth Birthday
But Bethan’s idea of sincerity was completely different from Hugh’s.
She looked straight at Hugh and said, “What I want is devotion. I want respect without having to question you about everything. I want you to change on your own when you know I dislike something.
“I want you to respond, to follow through, to stay loyal, and to make me the only one that matters. That’s what security means to me. That’s what sincerity is.”
Bethan felt a little dazed as she pointed toward the door. “Hugh, I’ve worked all day and I’m exhausted. I don’t have the energy to argue with you or listen to excuses.”
Her voice was faint as she went on. “From this day forward, I don’t need you in my life. Please stay as far away from me as possible.”
Hugh watched her silently for a long moment. Then, he took a small jewelry box from his pocket and set it on the dining table before speaking in a low voice, “Get some

Bethan on the verge of collapse. His gaze flickered, and before he could stop himself, he walked back and pulled her into his arms.
Before she could react, Hugh pressed a kiss to her forehead and whispered, “Happy twenty-sixth birthday, Bethan.” Letting her go, he walked out of her apartment.
Bethan then rushed into the bathroom, turned on the tap, and splashed water on her face.
Back when she had pursued Hugh, people told her that with both of them being Scorpios, they were either destined for perfection or bound to destroy each other. She always answered with pride that it had to be perfection.
They looked good together, their ages matched, their personalities complemented each other, and even their education lined up.
But Bethan had overlooked one thing-Hugh was far sharper than most people, and his upbringing had only made him more rational, more pragmatic, and more

Leaning against the wall, Hugh lit a cigarette and replied, “If I don’t go, she won’t be able to rest.”
Jacob stepped back a few paces, still clutching the cake, and said nothing more. Meanwhile, Hugh remained silent, smoking one cigarette after another.
As the clock struck midnight, Hugh ground out the last stub of his cigarette. He straightened, turned to Bethan’s apartment door, and whispered a wish in his heart.
On every one of Bethan’s past birthdays, he had been with her, making wishes, blowing out candles, and exchanging gifts. But this year, the theme of her birthday was arguments and separation.

The next morning, Bethan left the house on time. Even with light makeup, the weariness on her face was impossible to hide.
She noticed the pile of cigarette butts scattered at the door, but paid them no attention.
She knew Hugh well enough to understand his pride. He wasn’t the kind of man who would cling to her shamelessly. If it hadn’t been for the need to keep her around as a cover for their so-called family, he never would have tolerated her this long.
Bethan believed that for a while, he would not show up again.
So, she threw herself into her work, and before she knew it, the year had drawn to a close.
During that time, Hugh neither sought Bethan out nor reached out in any way. The lawyer she had hired submitted several requests for a court hearing, but each time, his attorney managed to block them.
