Chapter 124 She Was A Chess Piece

Hugh’s eyes flicked over her before he stood.

In full view of her family, he slipped an arm around her shoulders with an intimacy that made her skin crawl.

Turning to her parents, he said, “Vincent, Miranda, Bethan and I are heading out.”

As they left, he tossed a pointed jab at Barry. “Take it easy on the phone during your break, Barry. Look after your mom and let your dad get some rest.”

Bethan, catching her family’s mix of fury and restraint, shook off his arm and strode out of the ward.

Hugh was a master at keeping up appearances.

She was no match for his polished maneuvering.

At the hospital entrance, as Bethan moved to climb into the car, her phone buzzed. It was Tristen.

her face.

Over a single kind word from someone else, her eyes turned red.

He’d pulled strings for her, yet she seemed ungrateful.

Bethan ended the call, and they slipped into the car.

In the plush backseat of the sedan, Hugh reached for her hand.

When she tried to pull away, he slid his arm around her shoulders, drawing her close and pressing her head against his chest with a gentle but firm insistence.

“You’ve been running around the hospital all morning,” he said. “You must be exhausted. Close your eyes and rest. I’ll wake you when we get there.”

His words dripped with care but carried a commander’s weight.

Bethan shut her eyes, going limp in his arms like a puppet on his strings.

prestigious education, her striking looks-and her lack of a powerful family to challenge him.

She was a canvas he could shape, a pawn he could

control.

Their marriage, she now saw, was built on his

calculations from the start.

Her naivety, her heart-led choices, had cost her and her family dearly.

The ride passed in suffocating silence.

Over an hour later, the sleek black car rolled onto Cavill Manor’s grounds.

Gwen flung open the car door as Bethan stepped out.

“Bethan,” Gwen said, her voice breaking as she threw her arms around her, tears brimming in her eyes.

Hugh stepped out, draping his coat over Bethan’s

shoulders. 3/6

He wanted the Cavill elders to see that, despite his affair and illegitimate child, his marriage remained unshaken, and his reputation and the Cavill Group’s future were

secure.

Her compliance was his shield for Megan and her son.

In the living room, Fiona rushed to greet her, while Ryan’s eyes gleamed with pride for his son.

“Now that you’ve come around,” Ryan said to Bethan, “live well with Hugh. Stop kicking up a fuss over nothing.”

Bethan swallowed her retort, staying silent.

Harvey fixed Hugh with a stern gaze.

Then, he said to her, “Bethy, as long as I’m here, your

place as Hugh’s wife is secure. Those other women? You don’t need to worry about them.”

Bethan lowered her eyes, her voice flat. “Thank you, Grandpa.”

He words were polite, but her heart saw the truth. ThOJE

was to Hugh and the Cavill Group.

She was a chess piece. If she was useful, she stayed, and when she was useless, she was gone.

Halfway through dinner, Bethan excused herself.

She had no appetite, no strength to play Hugh’s happy-family charade.

Fiona followed her to the side parlor, pulling her aside. “Bethy, keep what I said in mind. Don’t let yourself get boxed in.”
