When she finally stilled, Hugh pulled her into his arms, then slipped a key into her hand.
“This is for the house in the city,” he said quietly. “Have your parents move back in.”
Bethan wrenched herself free and stepped back.
She placed the key down and shook her head. “My parents already have a place to live. If you really care about them, give the jewelry back to the Olsen family.”
Hugh’s gaze locked on hers. “You are Mrs. Cavill. It isn’t right for your parents to keep living where they are.”
Bethan turned away, her voice cold. “Hugh, it’s just the two of us here. You don’t need to pretend.”
His eyes darkened, his patience thinning.
For the second time, he pressed the key into her hand and qovered it with his own. “Bethan, this isn’t a negotiation17 If you want the jewelry, do as I say.”

dug into her palm. “You’re so good at convincing people. Why don’t you go say it yourself?”
Hugh’s tone was flat. “No reason. You’re the better choice.”
Bethan felt her strength drain away in an instant, her legs so weak she could barely hold herself upright.
She staggered back a few steps and had to brace herself against the cabinet to keep from collapsing.
Hugh had handed her the keys and told her to convince her parents to move into his house.
She knew exactly what he was doing. He wanted her parents to believe she was staying in the marriage of her own free will.
He was using her to soften their resistance and using her submission to silence them.
Bethan stood frozen for a long moment before whispering, “If you’re so worried about saving face in front of my parents, then hire them a housekeeper, a driver, and get my brother into a day school.”☐

He could lavish his love on another woman and their son
without restraint.
And she could just as recklessly spend his wealth.
If this marriage was destined to end in ruin, then they could drag each other down to the bitter end.
Hugh agreed without hesitation, “We’re husband and wife. Taking care of your parents is my responsibility.”
He stepped close, his hand brushing her waist as if to steady her. “Tomorrow night, there’s a private jewelry gala. I’ll introduce you to someone.”
His voice sounded almost courteous, but the steel beneath it made it clear-it wasn’t a request.
Bethan tugged at the corner of her lips, but said nothing.
In Hugh’s eyes, she was just another accessory. When he needed her by his side, she didn’t have the choice to
refuse.
The next evening, Bethan arrived on Hugh’s arm in a gown the color of a starry sky, drawing every gaze the20:18

Hugh, in a tailored black suit, his height and striking features sharpened by the aura of the Cavill heir, commanded the room with ease.
Together they looked like a golden couple, so dazzling that murmurs rippled through the crowd.
A young couple stepped forward to greet them. The man, Robert Wells, smiled, “Hugh, it’s been ages since I’ve seen you at an event like this.”
Hugh slipped his arm more firmly around Bethan’s shoulders and said warmly, “My wife has been studying abroad. It wasn’t much fun attending alone.”
His easy lie drew instant admiration from Robert. “As expected from the model husband of our circle.”
Bethan’s lips curved in a silent, bitter smile.
Of course. He could spin a lie without blinking, and people swallowed it whole.
Hugh gestured between them. “Bethan, this is Nora. She’s a top graduate from the medical school. You two should Have plenty to talk about.”

After Hugh and Robert drifted off, Bethan and Nora found a quieter corner to chat.
