Chapter 129 The Unloved One

After talking for a while, they returned to the ballroom, only to find Hugh gone.
Nora tugged Bethan into a quiet corner and whispered, “He got a call and left in a rush.”
Bethan didn’t need to ask who it was.
Only one woman had that power over Hugh-Megan.
“Mason, I’ll head home first,” she said, her voice calm as
she made her exit.
When she returned home late that night, the house was silent. Sure enough, Hugh wasn’t there.
She showered, slipped into her pajamas, and curled up on the sofa, passing the time by chatting with Barry on WhatsApp.
She was just about to go to bed when the door opened. Hugh walked in.

He asked, “Why didn’t you wait for me? You should’ve told me before leaving.”
Bethan’s brow furrowed. “Isn’t that exactly what you did? Left me behind without a word?”
His gaze darkened, his eyes fixed on her shifting expression. Just as he opened his mouth, Bethan cut him off. “Whatever’s going on with her, I don’t need you to explain. I get it.”
She might be trapped, but she refused to know anything more about Hugh and Megan.
Hugh’s expression hardened. “I haven’t even said a word. What exactly do you ‘get’?”
Bethan lifted her chin and met his gaze head-on.
She took a deep breath. “I understand that you and Ms. Ridley are in love, but you can’t be together openly.
“I understand how much it hurts you not to bring your son home. I understand why you resent your grandfather your parents for refusing to acknowledge your child.” 2/6

She paused, then said quietly, “And most of all, I understand how awful it must feel-even though you love Ms. Ridley deep down, you still have to come home to me every day. Your misery must be just as deep as mine.”
Hugh reached for her hand, but Bethan snapped, yanking it away with fury.
Bethan stepped back. Her voice was steady, but her words cut deep. “To the world, I’m your legal wife. But between you, me, and Ms. Ridley, the unloved one-the outsider— is me.”
She lifted her chin. “You don’t need to keep reminding me that you have another home, another woman you love, and a child with her. I know exactly where I stand.”
Her emotions were fraying, spilling past her control. Hugh leaned forward and tried to pull her into his arms.
Bethan shoved him back with all her strength.
She snapped, “If you want to love her, to be with them, then go. I promise I won’t cry, or make a scene. I won’t get in your way. But stop stabbing me in the heart by throwing details of your devotion in my face. I’m still2:18

bedroom.
Hugh stood frozen, unable to recover from what she’d just said.
It was the first time Bethan had brought up Megan so calmly, so openly.
There had been no tears, no screaming, no desperate threats.
He had always claimed he wanted to know what she was thinking. Tonight, she finally made it—she finally spoke her mind.
But instead of relief, his chest felt unbearably heavy.
Dragging his steps, he entered the bedroom. Bethan was already lying down, the blanket pulled to her chest.
Her shoulders peeked out, her hair spilling across the pillow. Even bare-faced in sleep, she was breathtaking.
Hugh stood there for a long time, watching her in silence, before retreating into the bathroom.

He knew she wasn’t asleep. The stillness around her carried a suffocating sense of despair.

He lifted the blanket and slipped in beside her, pulling her rigid body against his chest.
Bethan didn’t open her eyes. She gave him nothing.
He smoothed her hair and bent to kiss her brow.
Bethan couldn’t keep up the act anymore. She pushed against his chest, trying to put distance between them. “I’m exhausted. If you need someone, go for Ms. Ridley.”
Hugh shifted, bracing himself above her, his eyes locked on her face.
“I’m your husband, Bethan. Is this really how badly you want to push me away?” His voice was low, rough.
If she felt a rage in her heart and wanted to make a scene, he could take it. But this coldness-it cut deeper.
Bethan pressed her palms to his chest. “Isn’t this exactly the outcome you’ve been pushing me toward?”

She understood their fear. They were worried Hugh would turn on her if they accepted his help, and they couldn’t bear thé humiliation of that fallout.
What they didn’t know was that she had already signed a marital agreement.
As long as she didn’t divorce him, she had full rights to Hugh’s wealth.
He had engineered the game, trapping her so that every struggle she made was already accounted for in his plans.
She couldn’t escape. But she could stop the bleeding- protect herself and protect her family, even within the
cage.
Bethan kept her tone calm as she told Miranda, “Mom, the Cavills are New York’s most powerful family. Hugh is their only heir. He’s handsome, he’s capable, he’s ruthless and well-connected. He gave me the title of Mrs. Cavill. He gave me a life of luxury. What more is there to cling:19
