Bethan had compromised. And as her parents, they had

no choice but to accept it too.

Near noon, Bethan went to buy lunch.

On her way back through the hospital corridor, she unexpectedly ran into Megan and her son.

It had only been a short time, but Bethan could see that Megan had had subtle work done to her face. The changes were slight, but noticeable.

She wore a light designer down jacket, every piece on her body branded and expensive. Her posture and mannerisms bore the polish of someone carefully trained.

She had clearly been preparing for this role in the

shadows.

When Megan saw Bethan alone, a smile tugged at her lips. “Mrs. Cavill. It’s been a while.”

She spoke with warm politeness, as if greeting an old friend.

Megan bent down and whispered something in Hudson’s

ear.

Hudson lifted his water gun and aimed it at Bethan. “Rude woman! Didn’t you hear my mom talking to you?”

Bethan didn’t react in time. A stream of water soaked her

hair and clothes.

Megan stood behind her son, making no move to stop him.

At that moment, Barry stepped out of the hospital room. He recognized Megan and Hudson immediately.

Seeing Bethan being attacked by a child, fury lit his face. He stormed forward, yanking Hudson up by the collar. “You little brat. Want me to smash you into the ground?”

Hudson screamed and burst into tears, dropping the water gun and wailing for Megan.

Megan rushed forward to shield him. “Let go of my son! Even if you don’t like us, that doesn’t mean you can put your hands on a child.”

worry, Bethan. I wasn’t going to hurt him. I just wanted to scare him a little.”

Megan crouched to scoop Hudson into her arms. She whispered something in his ear, and moments later, the boy kicked his legs against the floor, wailing even louder. “It hurts! It hurts everywhere!”

Straightening, Megan faced Bethan with a show of composure. “Mrs. Cavill, everyone here saw it. Your brother laid hands on my son. Now Hudson says he’s in pain. Surely it isn’t unreasonable for me to demand a full medical checkup?”

Barry’s face darkened with anger and regret. “I only lifted him! Which eye of yours saw me strike him?”

Megan pressed her advantage. “Children are fragile. Trauma can be far worse than physical injury.”

Bethan knew Barry’s temperament better than anyone.

Born with every luxury and adored by all, he had fallen overnight from the clouds into hardship.

His resentment toward Megan and her son only made his reaction more understandable.

She handed him the food she’d been carrying. “Go back and have lunch with Mom. I’ll take care of this.”
