Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 135

Chapter 135 We’ll Agree to Your Conditions

Bethan draped Hugh’s jacket over her arm, shifted slightly to the side, and lowered her gaze. Her face betrayed nothing.

A moment later, the sharp crack of leather on flesh split the silence of the grand room.

Ryan watched with satisfaction as the whip landed across Hugh’s back. But when he noticed Bethan standing motionless, utterly unreactive, his lip curled in contempt.

Kneeling on the polished floor, Hugh clenched his fists at his sides as the blows rained down.

His back burned, but when he lifted his head, his eyes sought Bethan.

She stood turned slightly away, head bowed, calm and distant.

A strange ache seized Hugh’s chest, so sharp it almost eclipsed the pain on his skin.

He remembered another time-back before their marriage-when he’d clashed with Harvey and taken the whip himself.

Bethan had come to visit Gwen that day and walked in just as the lash fell.

Without hesitation, she’d thrown herself over him, taking

the strike herself.

He had called her foolish.

She had gone pale with pain, but still managed a smile through clenched teeth.

She had said she didn’t care. She wanted to protect him.

But now? She stood only a few steps away, unwilling to move, unwilling even to look at him.

Fiona, standing at Ryan’s side, saw Hugh’s reddened eyes fixed desperately on Bethan as the lashes fell.

Anger and pity tangled inside her chest until she had to look away.

A marriage died fastest when one partner gave everything, and the other felt nothing at all.

Bethan’s greatest mistake had been pouring her youth and love into a man who never knew how to cherish her.

At last Harvey raised his hand. Logan immediately pulled back the whip and hurried to help Hugh to his feet.

The back of Hugh’s white shirt was soaked and torn, blood oozing through the fabric.

He forced himself upright and, in agony, walked back to Bethan’s side. His eyes clung to her face, but still she refused to meet his gaze.

Harvey’s cloudy eyes were cold and sharp. “Tomorrow morning, you will hold a press conference together. You’ll appear hand in hand and put this scandal to rest.”

Bethan lowered her lashes, silent for a moment.

Of course. To the Cavill men, infidelity was nothing. What mattered was preserving the family’s interests.

convenient shield they could drag out whenever they needed to hide their shame.

Hugh looked sidelong at Bethan, masking his expression. “Don’t worry, Grandfather. I’ll put this fire out quickly.”

When he finished, Bethan finally spoke, her tone deliberate and calm, “I’ll cooperate with clarifying the rumors. But I have conditions.”

Ryan bristled. “You’re Hugh’s wife. Protecting the Cavill family’s reputation is your duty!”

Bethan turned her gaze on him, voice cool and cutting. “Show me where in the marriage law it says a wife must cover up her husband’s mistress and illegitimate child- and clean up his mess on top of it.”

Ryan’s face went rigid with fury. “A fallen socialite dares to bargain with us? Do you even know your place?”

Bethan straightened, confidence radiating from her like armor. “Whether I matter to the Cavills or not is irrelevant. If you want my cooperation, then here’s my price—from this day forward, none of you will interfere in my work, and none of you will ever threaten my family6:39

again for any reason.”

After Christmas, she was set to begin at the Dixon family’s private hospital.

Her career and her family were the last lines she refused to surrender.

And she would not allow anyone to trample them.

Hugh’s eyes darkened as he studied her.

So this was what all her maneuvering had been about –not the scandal, not the marriage, but making sure Harvey could never again reach into her life and strip away her work.
