Chapter 157 Generous
One sentence, two direct hits.
He’d just reminded everyone that Elsie was a bastard child while simultaneously branding Megan as nothing more than a bottom-tier social media nobody.
Megan knew her place and kept quiet. She wasn’t about to speak up when she had no real standing here.
But Elsie didn’t have any of Mason’s attitude. “We’re all born equal,” she shot back. “Everyone here earns their money through their own skills. What makes you think you’re better than the rest of us, Mr. Martin?”
Mason’s response was deliberately cruel. “Simple. I’m not some bastard.”
That hit Elsie right where it hurt most.
She was about to explode when Frank cut her off, “Take your friend and leave. Now.”
Elsie spun around and stormed out, fuming.

Megan practically slunk away with her tail between her legs, following behind. She’d worked so hard to get into an event like this, and now she was kicked out before the party started.
Sure, she came from nothing special: But Bethan’s family had gone bankrupt too-she wasn’t much better off. Besides, Megan was making her own way now. She wasn’t asking Hugh for handouts like some people.
The whole Olsen family were parasites as far as she could see. They all lived off Hugh’s money.
So what was she missing? What did Bethan have that she
didn’t?
Why did Bethan get to stand by Hugh’s side like she owned the place, while I got nothing?
She couldn’t accept it. Hiding behind a pillar near the entrance, Megan pulled out her phone and secretly called Elsie.
The crowd started to break up, and someone called Mason away. Hugh caught Bethan’s arm and pulled her aside.

His eyes locked onto her face, searching for something. “What exactly were you trying to pull back there?”
Bethan didn’t even blink. “I thought you two were about to have some grand reunion, so I figured I’d help things along. Didn’t expect your beloved to chicken out at the last second.”
Hugh’s expression went thunderous. “How generous of you.”
“Working with Mr. Cavill all this time has really broadened my horizons,” she said, perfectly calm.
They stared at each other in silence. Hugh’s hands tightened around hers, his chest rising and falling with barely controlled anger.
He’d thought she was jealous. Instead, she’d been playing matchmaker, trying to push him back toward Megan.
In the distance, Bethan spotted Frank’s mother, Edith Davis, surrounded by her usual entourage.
She slipped her hands free without making a scene. “You 3/7

handle your business. I should go say hello to Madam Edith Davis.”
Hugh watched her walk away, that confident stride carrying her toward the cluster of society wives. Something twisted in his chest.
Just as she reached them, he caught her wrist and adjusted her wrap. “I’ll be with Mr. Davis. Don’t wander off when we’re done here.”
Bethan nodded once and turned away.
She was starting to think Hugh had some serious split personality issues. One second, he was glaring at her like he wanted to strangle her with his bare hands, and the next, he was being all thoughtful and considerate, adjusting her shawl and telling her not to wander off.
About half an hour later, Bethan emerged from the side parlor where Edith had been resting. She circled around the ballroom, scanning the crowd, but Hugh was nowhere to be found.
Bethan glanced at the time-it was past ten-thirty.

She said goodbye to the group, ready to head home.
Tonight, Megan had been publicly mocked by Mason and ridiculed by the crowd. Hugh was probably heartbroken, tending to her.
Bethan figured Hugh was too busy comforting Megan to bother with her.
“You’re Mrs. Cavill?”
At the gala’s entrance, Elsie blocked Bethan’s path.
Bethan stopped and nodded.
Elsie sized her up, jealousy flashing in her eyes. “Don’t think your pretty face gives you a claim to him. Mr. Cavill loves Megan.”
Bethan shook her head. “You’re wrong. I’ve known my husband for over twenty years. I’m his one true love.”
Elsie looked at Bethan like she was a fool.
