Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 18

Chapter 18 What Did She Ever Do Wrong?

Since he couldn’t convince Hugh, Mason shifted the topic. “That Megan is really something. Knowing you’re married, she still stops you from explaining. She’s obviously trying to break you two up.”

Hugh’s expression turned serious and his voice deepened. “Mason, don’t talk about Megan like that.”

Mason sat up straight. “I’m not bad-mouthing her. I’m just stating the facts. What she’s doing is clearly trying to drive a wedge between you two.”

Hugh lit a cigarette, and the wispy smoke veiled his eyes.

After a long moment, he began to explain, “Megan comes from a humble background and has a pure heart. Back then, to help me inherit the Cavill Group smoothly, she was forced by my grandpa to go abroad and get married. She’s suffered a great deal for me over the years, and I owe her big time.

“She’s been through abuse, and her health is in really bad shape. She also has severe depression. I have to take care of her.”

Mason grinned meaningfully. “Just admit it. You still wave feelings for her.”

Hugh frowned. “Mason, she almost ruined her whole life for me. I gotta be responsible for her.

“Megan won’t let me explain to Bethan because she’s super sensitive and has a huge ego. She’s scared Bethan will use it against her and that people will talk, saying she’s trying to get with me by playing the victim.”

Mason shot back, “She won’t let you explain to Bethan and always clings to you. She takes your money, your time, and your energy like it’s nothing. She’s even chipping away at your marriage with Bethan. That’s not just scheming?”

Hugh replied, “It’s different. I’m more than willing to make it up to her.”

Mason argued, saying, “You feel guilty about Megan, think you’re responsible for her and still have feelings for her. But what about Bethan? What did she ever do wrong?”

Hugh sighed tiredly, “No one’s saying she did anything wrong.”

Mason continued, “You’re not saying she’s wrong, but you’re not explaining things to her either and won’t let her divorce you. With Bethan’s temper, she’s gonna go nuts!”

Hugh felt a pang in his chest, but he didn’t think it would get that bad. “I promised to let her go back to work. She’ll feel better.”

Mason stared at Hugh in disbelief. “So, you really aren’t gonna clear things up with Bethan. You’re just banking on her love for you and making her deal with all this?”

Hugh clinked glasses with Mason. “It’s not as bad as you’re making it out to be.”

Just then, Mason’s phone rang.
