Chapter 181 I Want A Divorce

Bethan retracted her gaze in silence and turned to face Hugh.
“I accepted them back then because you pushed me into it. It was tough, but I did it. I’ve come to terms with them completely,” she said.
Megan and her son were a part of his life. How could he just send them away?
Besides, she’d just joined hands with Megan. There was no way she’d let Megan leave now.
Hugh grasped Bethan’s shoulders firmly, looking straight into her eyes. “You recognized Hudson as your godson without even talking to me. You set up a place for them upstairs. That’s not acceptance. That’s just being impulsive!”
Bethan tilted her head up to meet his gaze.
“You’ve arranged a place for them. You never stopped that kid from calling you daddy in private. You even threatened your grandpa with your life for them. We’ve:10

known each other since we were kids, for over twenty years. I was just trying to help you. How’s that being impulsive?”
Hugh felt like his heart had been dropped from a great height and shattered into a million pieces. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t piece it back together.
This sense of helplessness almost knocked him off his feet.
He took a step back, still holding her shoulders, and leaned against the railing for support. “Anyway, I never brought them into this house!”
Hugh demanded, “Bethan, what on earth are you up to? Do you still want this family or not?”
Bethan smiled and asked, “Hugh, do you want the truth or a lie?”
Hugh’s hands on her shoulders tightened instinctively. “I want to know what you really think!”
Bethan looked up into his eyes. “To be honest, I want a divorce.”

Their eyes locked. The determination in Bethan’s eyes felt like a stab to Hugh’s heart.
His eyes welled up, and his hands on her shoulders slowly dropped.
“Bethan, this isn’t what I wanted.” he said softly.
Bethan smiled back at him, “I gave it my all, but I süll didn’t get what I wanted.”
Late at night on the open-air balcony, the childhood sweethearts of over twenty years stared at each other.
The cold winter wind couldn’t break the tension between
them.
After a moment, Hugh took Bethan’s hand. “Come with me,” he said.
Bethan let him lead her into the study.
Hugh opened the drawer and took out a stack of papers.
He guided Bethan to the floor-to-ceiling window and 3/6

gently sat her down on the sofa.
He placed the papers in front of her. “The marital agreement and all the evidence of when I had you detained are here,” he said.
Bethan glanced at the things in front of her but didn’t reach for them.
“What’s your point?” she asked.
Hugh always had a purpose in what he did.
He wouldn’t just hand these things over for no reason.
Hugh watched Bethan’s expression closely. “Believe it or not, I did all that back then just to get you to come home.”
Bethan let him hold her hand and asked, “And then?”
Hugh paused for a moment. “I can destroy all these things and won’t hold you back anymore,” he said.
Bethan looked wary. “What’s the catch?”

Hugh locked eyes with Bethan and said earnestly, “Bethan, I know some of the things I’ve done have hurt you and made you misjudge me. But from now on, I’ll keep Megan and her son out of our lives. I’ll respect all your decisions. Just give me a bit of trust and stop raising a ruckus, okay?”
Bethan sat there quietly, outwardly calm but inwardly weighing her options.
Trusting Hugh was out of the question.
Yet, if this was a chance to get rid of the hold he had on her and break free from his control, Bethan was willing to give it a shot.
She probed, her tone laced with suspicion. “These things can be backed up. How can I trust you?”
Hugh’s gaze was unwavering. “I can transfer all my assets to your name. If you’re still not at ease, I’ll make a will. All my current and future earnings will go to you and our future kids. Megan and her son won’t get a dime.”
Bethan’s mind was racing.
