Chapter 199 Have Dinner Together
Lucky Draw
After hearing everything, Bethan was left speechless.
Hugh continued, “After James’ mother took her life, Sir Keating fell ill. To revive the Keating family, James took a risk and partnered with an international business group. He quickly gathered huge startup funds, founded a company, and over the years managed to legitimize it.
“About a year back, James was attacked by a gang in Australia. He survived, but one of his legs was badly injured. He’s likely to come home quietly this time for medical care.”
Hugh paused briefly, then held Bethan’s hand and said, “I’m telling you all this because you need to be cautious. As James’ doctor, you’re not only dealing with his illness and his temper, but also real danger.”
Watching him closely, Bethan asked, “So what, you want me to treat him?”

Their eyes met, and Bethan’s lips twisted into a mocking smile. “Sure, you can’t stop me, but you’ve got enough schemes to threaten me, don’t you?”
Hugh let go of her, a frown forming as he gathered the first-aid box. “I said I wouldn’t do that to you anymore, and I meant it.”
Bethan stared at him, feeling unsettled all over. Part of her almost wished they’d just have a huge fight and not talk for three days.
Just as she was getting up to return to her room, Hugh called after her, “You’re there to heal, not to die trying. If things turn dangerous, remember to look out for yourself.”
Bethan stopped, turned back at him, and said, “You’re willing to risk your life for love, so why can’t I do the same for my career?”
They stared at each other until Hugh moved closer, meeting her gaze. “My life belongs to you.”
Bethan sneered, “I’d sooner believe in the end of the

world than believe that.” With that, she spun on her heel and went back to her room.
She couldn’t help wondering what was going on with Megan. Ever since Hugh scared her off with that phone call, she hadn’t shown her face for days, and now he was the one acting half-crazed, rambling nonstop.

The next few days left Bethan running ragged with work, while Hugh stayed in an almost “erratic” state.
Before she knew it, March had arrived. That morning, when Bethan was getting ready to leave, Hugh stepped in her way.
Hugh asked, “Bethan, do you know how long it has been since you sat down to eat here?”
She nudged him away, slipping into her shoes. “If you don’t like eating alone, have Megan and your kid join you.”
Seeing Hugh’s expression visibly turn cold, she pursed Bélips and said, “How about I call Mason and Mr. Locke

and let them have dinner with you instead?”

After saying that, Bethan reached for the door. But he caught her wrist and pulled her close. “We haven’t had dinner together in ages. Let me make a reservation for tonight. I’ll come get you after work.”
At this point, she thought Hugh wasn’t quite himself. After hesitating, she nodded briskly. “Have Jemma cook at home instead. I’ll come back early after work.”
When Bethan gave him a clear answer, the tension on his face eased slightly. His gaze slid from her delicate brows down to her lips, the softness he longed for.
Hugh’s hand circled her waist as he bent closer. But when his warm breath reached her, she turned aside. He paused, clearly startled, before letting go as though nothing had happened.
The door clicked open, then closed again, leaving Hugh frozen in place.
Ever since the morning Bethan got drugged, they hadn’t been intimate again.

When Hugh came home from work that evening, Jemma had already prepared a lavish dinner. “Go ahead and tidy up and leave for the night, Jemma,” he said.
Afterward, he chose a bottle from the wine cabinet, poured half into a decanter, and walked into the dining room, where he spotted a plate of matcha truffles.
Hugh stared at the truffles, and suddenly Bethan’s breakdown flashed through his mind.
After the day he baked that blueberry cake for Megan and her child, Bethan never went near matcha truffles again.
Pain struck through his chest, and Hugh quietly told Jemma, “Get rid of the truffles.”
No sooner had Jemma left than Bethan walked in.
