Steadying her emotions, Megan opened her bag and touched up her makeup.

Then, she leaned in and whispered something to Rachel, and the two stepped out of the car.

An hour later, Bethan, Hugh, Mason, and Arthur emerged from the restaurant together.

Arthur, ever the curious one, pointed to a crowd in the distance. “What’s all the commotion over there?”

Mason grabbed Bethan’s arm, turning to Hugh. “Let’s check it

out.”

As the group drew closer, they saw Rachel, Megan’s mother, sprawled on the side of the road, seemingly unconscious. 1/6

Megan was in the midst of the crowd, sobbing hysterically, pleading with passersby for help.

When her eyes landed on Hugh, her cries grew even more desperate. “Hugh, my mom’s passed out! Please, help me!”

The onlookers watched warily, hesitant to step forward and get involved. Hugh grabbed Bethan’s wrist, pulling her to the front.

“You’re a doctor,” he said, his tone urgent. “Check on her.”

Bethan yanked her hand free, her face a mask of icy disdain.

She looked down at Rachel and immediately noticed the faint flutter of the woman’s eyelashes.

“She’s fine,” Bethan said coolly to Hugh.

Megan, collapsed beside her mother, turned her tear-streaked face to Bethan, her voice trembling with accusation. “Dr. Olsen, you’re a doctor! My mom’s lying here unconscious. It’s fine if you won’t help, but how can you stand there making snide remarks like that?”

Megan deliberately addressed Bethan as “Dr. Olsen” instead of “Mrs. Cavill.”

murmurs rippled through the crowd. Someone started muttering about Bethan’s lack of compassion, calling her unfit to be a doctor.

Hugh leaned in, his voice low and tense. “Bethan, this is an

emergency. You’re a doctor, and now is not the time to play games with me.”

Bethan met his gaze with a look of calm detachment, her eyes cold and unwavering.

“Hugh,” she said evenly, “with all my years of medical experience, I can tell you these two women’s issue is purely psychological.”

She continued, her tone biting, “If you just pick Megan up, offer her a few sweet words, and take her mother home, I guarantee they’ll both be bouncing around in no time. They’ll probably cook you dinner and climb into bed with you, too.”

Their eyes locked, the air between them crackling with tension.

Hugh’s face darkened, his gaze carrying a clear warning.

Megan, still crying, crawled toward Bethan.

She clutched the hem of Bethan’s coat, her voice pleading. “Dr.

Olsen, I’m begging you. The ambulance isn’t here yet, and 19:43 don’t know what to do. Can you at least give my mom some

first aid?”

As the crowd’s accusations grew louder, Bethan looked down at Megan.

Her eyes flicked to the wrinkled fabric of her coat, crumpled in Megan’s grip, and her brow furrowed in irritation.

In one swift motion, she shook her coat free, sending Megan tumbling backward with a yelp.

Megan let out a dramatic scream as she hit the ground.

Hugh rushed to her side, bending down with concern. “Are you hurt?”

Megan clung to his hand, tears streaming down her face.

“Hugh, it’s not so much pain. But Dr. Olsen’s a doctor! Even if she hates me, how can she just stand there while a patient lies suffering right in front of her?”

Hugh gently disentangled himself from Megan and strode over to Bethan.

His voice was heavy with disappointment. “Bethan, you’re a doctor. How can you let personal grudges stop you from saving a life? Are you even worthy of your title?”

not isn’t for you to judge.”

Hugh’s sharp eyes narrowed, his expression tightening.

Bethan’s voice rose, cutting through the tension. “If you’re so worried about your lover’s mother, why are you wasting time arguing with me instead of rushing her to a hospital?”

The crowd, catching Bethan’s implication that Hugh was Megan’s husband, erupted in criticism.

“I thought he was just a bystander, but he’s this woman’s husband?”

“Strangers might hesitate to help, scared of taking the responsibility, but what’s his excuse for not stepping up? Not exactly a devoted family man, is he?”
