Chapter 216 Staying the Night at Keating Mansion

At the noon spectacle by the roadside, two of her colleagues had been among the onlookers.

She knew it wouldn’t be long before the entire hospital’s inpatient department knew Megan was her husband’s mistress.

If divorce wasn’t an option, then she didn’t mind making a

scene.

The worst-case scenario? Hugh would lose his temper and resort to his usual tactics to intimidate her.

But she wasn’t afraid this time.

James had promised to protect her and her family.

At three o’clock sharp, Bethan left the hospital for an off-site consultation.

Joe was tidying her office when Hugh knocked and entered.

“Where’s Dr. Olsen?” Hugh asked.

Joe handed him the medical report. “She’s out on a donsultation. Here’s your test result.”

Hugh glanced at the report briefly before handing it back. “Just give it to Dr. Olsen.”

Joe rolled his eyes. “Dr. Olsen said she’s divorcing you and

told me to return this to the medical center for you to pick up yourself.”

Hugh’s face darkened instantly, his jaw tightening.

By five that evening, Bethan had taken James for a stroll through Keating Mansion’s garden in his wheelchair. Then, they returned to the living room.

To her surprise, Hugh was there.

He glanced at James, then walked straight to Bethan.

“I’m here to take you home,” he said, his voice low and

strained.

Bethan wheeled James toward the dining room, tossing a casual reply over her shoulder. “I’m staying for dinner at Keating Mansion tonight. You can head back.”

Hugh’s expression grew heavier as he followed her into the dining room.

James didn’t ask him to leave, instead signaling a servant to add a place setting for him.

Hugh had barely settled at the table when his phone rang.

Bethan caught the flicker of his reaction and knew exactly who was calling.

She served James a small bowl of soup. “Mr. Keating, this broth is excellent for your sleep. You should try some.”

Before James could reply, Hugh rose hesitantly.

“Bethan,” he said, “I’ve got something to take care of. I’ll be back later to pick you up.”

Bethan watched his hurried steps, a mocking smile tugging at her lips.

A sharp clatter rang out as James tossed his spoon into his bowl.

“Dr. Olsen’s staying the night at Keating Mansion,” he declared. “No need to come back for her.”

Hugh froze mid-step at the dining room door.

Hugh turned back, his gaze sweeping over them in the dining44

room.

James raised an eyebrow, his tone casual but pointed. “You’re welcome to stay and join us for dinner if you’d like.”

Hugh’s sharp eyes locked onto Bethan, intense and unyielding.

Bethan sat quietly at the table, her attention fixed on the phone buzzing relentlessly in Hugh’s hand.

The three of them stood in a silent standoff for a few seconds before Hugh turned on his heel and walked out.

After he left, James turned to Bethan, his voice low and curious. “Are you serious about wanting a divorce?”

Bethan leaned in close, her tone playful yet earnest. “Jimmy, would you help me make it happen?”

Their eyes met, and James, with a subtle flick of his long, elegant fingers, tapped her forehead, gently pushing her back.

He picked up his spoon again, his voice cool but deliberate.

“If you can completely cure my insomnia, I might just consider helping you get that divorce.”

A spark of hope flared in Bethan’s eyes.

She and Hugh were never equals-not in background, not in ability.

She wasn’t sure if she could actually break free from him, but she was confident she could heal James’ trauma-induced

insomnia.

Now that James had given her an opening, she was determined to seize it.

Late that night, in a guest room on the first floor of Keating Mansion, Bethan stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, clad in soft lotus-pink satin pajamas, her silhouette serene against the moonlight.
