Chapter 218 Locke’s Torment

Megan’s gaze flickered, her composure slipping.

She’d deliberately chosen white lilies, hoping to curse Bethan subtly, but this loudmouth had called her out on the spot.

“It must’ve been a mistake at the florist,” she stammered, her guilt obvious.

Arthur thrust the bouquet back toward her, his smile sharp. “Eat these flowers, and I’ll let it slide.”

As Bethan stepped out of her office, the hallway was empty— Arthur and Megan were nowhere to be seen.

Joe leaned in and whispered something in her ear, and a shadow of worry crept into Bethan’s eyes.

Arthur could be as childish as a toddler one moment and wickedly cunning the next, like some gleeful mastermind.

Though Bethan considered herself fairly level-headed, she and Arthur clicked effortlessly.

She found him easy to get along with, his quirks and all.

Back in her office, she dialed Arthur’s number.

On the other end, Arthur stood beneath the towering pendulum ride at an amusement park.

“That ugly thing?” he said dismissively. “I couldn’t be bothered with her.”

After hanging up, he tilted his head back, watching Megan scream her lungs out on the ride above, and casually picked at his ear.

He turned to the person beside him. “When that eyesore comes down, tie her to the vertical roller coaster. Then make sure she gets a go on the bungee jump, the high-wire zipline, and that sky ladder. Let her have the full experience.”

Hours later, an ambulance pulled up to the hospital’s

emergency entrance.

Megan was wheeled out on a stretcher, looking worse for wear.

Hugh had come to find Bethan and stumbled right into the

scene.

Spotting him, Megan croaked out a desperate plea for help, her voice hoarse and strained.

The attending doctor, Devin Hardy, approached Hugh. “Are you the patient’s family?”

Before Hugh could respond, Joe piped up from nearby. “Dr. Hardy, I know them.”

He added, “Mr. Cavill is the father of Ms. Ridley’s child.”

Hearing that, Devin blocked Hugh’s path, ensuring he didn’t slip away.

Over an hour later, Megan was settled into a hospital room.

Her body was covered in scrapes and bruises, her face marred by cuts.

Her voice was so hoarse she could barely speak clearly.

Hugh stood by her bedside, his brow furrowed. “How did you end up like this?”

Megan struggled to shift her body, her trembling hands clutching at his sleeve.

Still shaken, she quivered as if the terror hadn’t yet left her.

“Hugh,” she rasped, her voice barely audible, “Mr. Locke tried to kill me!”

At that moment, Arthur poked his head through the doorway.

“You’ve got some nerve,” he said, grinning at Megan. “I was

kind enough to treat you to a fun day out, and you’re accusing me of murder?”

Megan’s eyes widened in terror, and she shrank back into her blankets, trembling like a frightened bird.

Hugh turned to Arthur, his tone sharp. “What are you doing

here?”

Arthur pointed at Megan, cowering on the bed. “Just checking if she’s still breathing.”

Hugh glanced at Megan, then strode to the door and swung it open, gesturing for Arthur to step inside.

“Did you do this to her?” Hugh asked, his voice low and pointed.

Arthur’s eyes glinted with a hint of menace. “She dared to bring white lilies to curse Bethy. She’s lucky I didn’t finish her off.”

With that, Arthur sauntered out, his swagger unfazed.

Hugh closed the door behind him.

He walked back to the bed, hands tucked into the pockets of his suit trousers, his posture rigid.

Megan, still huddled under the covers, waited for a sound that

didn’t come. Slowly, she peeked out.

Seeing Hugh standing there, staring at her in silence, she fidgeted nervously.
