Chapter 228 She Was Pregnant
She’d thought it was because Hugh wasn’t around, and her mood had finally lightened.
But now, the pieces fit together.

Bethan was a doctor. She had never been pregnant before, but she could recognize the signs.
Curling into herself on the bathroom floor, arms wrapped around her knees, her breathing grew unsteady.
Tomorrow at work, she needed to get a pregnancy test.
Outside the door, Hugh stood motionless, his gaze locked on the wood as if he could see through it.
A thought struck him. Quickly, he pulled out his phone, opened his calendar, and scrolled.
His expression shifted sharply. Slowly, his gaze returned to the closed bathroom door.
He tightened his grip on the phone, his breath quickening, his eyes unable to hide the surge of emotion.
Whatever he had realized, it made the corner of his lips lift19:50 uncontrollablv. his gaze softening with unspoken hope.

Just then, Hugh’s phone began to ring.

He knocked lightly on the bathroom door. “Bethan, I need to take this call. Don’t stay in there too long.”
But she didn’t reply.
His brow furrowed, and he knocked again, more firmly this
time. “Bethan?”
Inside, Bethan closed her eyes and forced herself to breathe deeply.
She steadied her emotions as best she could, then finally opened the door.
Hugh’s gaze swept over her pale face, a storm of emotions flickering in his eyes.
He reached out to guide her to the bed, pulled the blanket back, and tucked her beneath it.
Leaning down, he brushed the loose strands of hair from her forehead with uncharacteristic gentleness. “I’ll take this call in the study. If you feel worse, call for me.”
His movements were careful, his voice softer than she
remembered. “Keep the blanket on. Don’t let yourself get 19:50

chilled.”
Bethan’s chest tightened for no reason she could name. The calm concern in his eyes unsettled her.
She gave a vague nod, turned onto her side, and pulled the blanket higher.
Hugh’s gaze lingered, tracing the subtle curves of her body beneath the quilt. Something unreadable passed through his expression, softening it.
Then the phone rang again. He forced himself to turn away and padded quietly out of the room.
Bethan shut her eyes. She wanted to think, but exhaustion dragged her under.
In the study, Hugh answered without closing the door.
It was Jacob. “Mr. Cavill, there’s been an incident with Ms. Ridley.”
Hugh’s jaw tightened. “Explain.”
Jacob replied, “Someone threw paint across her apartment door and stairwell. Her car was smashed, and she’s in a terrible state. She says she needs to see you, that there are things she can only tell you in person.”

Hugh hesitated briefly, then said flatly, “Tell her I’m busy. Handle it yourself.”

He hung up and returned to the bedroom, only to find Bethan already asleep.
Quietly, he lay down beside her, careful not to wake her.
Through the blanket, he slipped an arm around her waist, his palm resting warmly against her lower belly. He pressed a feather-light kiss to her brow, then to her closed eyes.
The next morning, a sharp scream shattered the quiet.
Bethan woke with a start to find Hugh beside her. She nearly tumbled off the bed, but his arms were faster, catching her and pulling her back.
Breathless and wide-eyed, she clutched the blanket to her chest, glaring. “Why are you in my bed?”
Hugh noticed the color in her cheeks had returned since last night. He slid out of bed, picked up the blanket that had slipped to the floor, and shook it out.
Standing by the mattress, he said calmly, “You didn’t react like this the first time we slept together.”

He sat on the edge of the bed and pulled the covers securely around her.
His gaze caught hers, steady and unyielding. “They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. What’s wrong with me holding you through the night?”
Bethan’s instincts told her there was more in his words than he was admitting, but she had no time to press.
At eight-thirty sharp, she arrived at the hospital.
Locking herself inside her office restroom, she pulled a pregnancy test from the pharmacy bag.
Within seconds, two red lines appeared. Her knees buckled, and she sank against the cold tile.
