Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 229

Chapter 229 End the Pregnancy

Even if it came into the world, it would be unloved from the very start.

The child was innocent-she knew that.

But she couldn’t let it be born.

And she could never let anyone find out that she was carrying Hugh’s child.

She had to find a way to end the pregnancy, and soon.

A knock startled her from her daze. Forcing herself upright, she cleaned herself and unlocked the door.

Tristen was waiting, concern etched across his features. “You don’t look well. Are you overworked? Maybe you should take a few days off.”

Bethan managed a tired smile. “I’m fine. Just didn’t sleep well last night.”

Tristen placed a file on her desk.

He said, “At the end of the month, there’s a symposium in Los Angeles with a visiting team of specialists. Our hospital has 9:50 three spots. and I want you to go. Can you make it?”

Bethan’s eyes lit up. “Yes. I’ll go.”

By her count, she was only four weeks along at most. By the end of the month, she’d have the perfect excuse to leave town.

She could attend the symposium, then stay in Los Angeles an extra couple of days. It would give her the chance she needed— to quietly end the pregnancy before anyone, especially Hugh, ever found out.

After Tristen left her office, Bethan couldn’t settle. She paced back and forth, her thoughts restless.

If Hugh had deliberately set her up, then he would be watching her closely.

After the way she’d been sick last night-and the strange, almost out-of-character way he reacted-he had to be suspicious already.

She needed to find a way to throw him off.

Bethan picked up the office phone. A short while later, her assistant Joe knocked and came in.

Bethan leaned close and whispered a few instructions. Joe nodded and left.

Over an hour later, Joe returned carrying a blood test report and a small bag of medicine.

The name on the report was Bethan’s.

The results showed elevated white blood cell and neutrophil counts-clear signs of infection.

That afternoon, Bethan made a brief visit to Keating Mansion before heading home early.

To her surprise, Hugh was already there waiting.

He walked over and bent down, placing a pair of slippers at her

feet.

Bethan changed shoes without betraying any reaction.

“You’re on your feet all day at the hospital,” Hugh said. “Flats are better for you. Tomorrow I’ll take you shopping for a few pairs.”

Bethan instantly caught the subtle probing in his tone.

She didn’t respond, just set her bag down on the counter.

Hugh followed her, poured a glass of warm water, and set it in front of her.

His eyes lingered on her pale face. “You don’t look well. You should get a full check-up. I’ll take you tomorrow.”

Lowering her gaze, Bethan hid the flicker of panic in her eyes.

She shook her head. “I’m fine.”

She reached into her bag and pulled out the medicine Joe had brought.

One by one, she placed the pills on the counter, two of each.

Hugh’s expression darkened as his eyes moved over the cold medicine in front of her.

When she picked up the pills, he grabbed her wrist. “Don’t take anything yet. I’ll take you for tests tomorrow. Then you can medicate properly.”

Bethan pulled her hand free and fixed him with a steady look. “Hugh, did you forget I’m a doctor?”

Their eyes locked, neither yielding.

Hugh couldn’t read a single crack in Bethan’s expression.

Then Bethan calmly put every pill into her mouth, washed them down with a gulp of water, and set the glass aside. 19:50

Meeting his gaze, she said evenly, “It’s just a cold. Some medicine and rest will be enough. You don’t need to be this

nervous.”

Without another word, she turned and went into the bedroom, closing the door gently behind her.

She waited a few seconds, then cracked it open just enough to

see.

Sure enough, Hugh had taken the blood test report from her bag and was studying it. Her chest tightened, and she forced her breathing shallow and quiet.

She knew it-Hugh never trusted anything at face value. Thank goodness she had planned ahead.
