Her heart leapt, excitement breaking through her tears. “Then if you still have feelings for me, why push me away like this?”
“Hugh,” she whispered, her voice trembling with longing, “I came back for you. Let’s start over. Let’s go back to how things were six years ago. Please.”
But a flicker of disgust flashed through his eyes, gone almost as quickly as it came.
His reply was ice. “Six years ago, when you were untouched and pure, I still didn’t sleep with you. What makes you think I’d want you now-after you’ve married another man and had his child?”
The words struck her like a blow.
Megan staggered back, her face crumpling, tears gushing uncontrollably.
She couldn’t bear such blame. Her voice cracked into a scream. “Do you think I ended up like this for no reason? Do you think I wanted this life?”
Her fury lashed out. “If it hadn’t been for your grandfather, 958

he hadn’t forced me to leave and marry another man because of your status as heir, would I have spent six years being beaten down, living like the walking dead?”
Her sobs grew ragged, her words tumbling in broken gasps. “And now, after all that, you despise me because I was married, because I had a child. What about everything I sacrificed? Was it all for nothing?”
Hugh’s face didn’t flinch. His tone was steady, almost detached. “I remember what you gave up for me. That’s why I’ve done what I can to repay you. To ease your burden, to stop my grandfather from making things harder, to let you live with dignity again—I claimed your son as mine. That is the greatest compensation I can offer you.”
The fight drained out of Megan’s body. She collapsed under the streetlight, weak and trembling.
Tilting her face up at him, she asked in a broken whisper, “So there’s truly nothing left between us? Not even a little?”
Hugh’s voice was firm, cutting off any illusion. “No. I feel nothing for you now. Not for your heart, and certainly not for your body.”
Each word pierced like glass. Megan clutched her chest and wept with a grief that shredded the night air.

He continued, “Next week, I’ll transfer Hudson to a private academy. I’ll cover the tuition and all future expenses. If you run into any problems, contact my assistant. But don’t you dare show up in front of me or my wife again.”
His voice sharpened. “Megan, six years ago you couldn’t fit into my life. Now it’s even less possible. Stop chasing after something that doesn’t exist. Take Hudson, live your life quietly. That’s the only path you have left.”
Without another glance, Hugh turned and got into his car, driving off.
At the same time, across town in the heart of New York City, Arthur came jogging over, holding out a milkshake like an
eager puppy.
He crouched by the passenger side of his car, looking up at Bethan with worried eyes. “Bethy, are you okay? Want me to rough him up for you? Might make you feel better.”
Bethan wiped the tears from her cheeks, shoved the straw into the milkshake, and took a long sip.
“Don’t you dare,” she said quietly. “I’m fine.”

“Mr. Locke,” Bethan said firmly, “please take me to Keating
Mansion.”
Late that night, at Keating Mansion, the butler led Arthur and Bethan into the drawing room.
Bethan politely greeted Andy, who glanced up at the antique clock on the wall before addressing her.
Andy said, “Dr. Olsen, it’s late. Coming here with Mr. Locke at this hour—was there some emergency?”
Bethan didn’t hesitate. “Sir Keating, I had a fight with my husband tonight. I’d like to stay here for a few days.”
Hugh’s affairs and her threat of divorce might not be public gossip to outsiders, but in New York’s high society, it was no secret. There was no point pretending.
Andy’s face remained composed as he refused. “Married couples quarrel, Dr. Olsen, but it blows over. If you don’t want to go home, I can arrange a hotel or a villa for you.”
