Chapter 246 Trample on Real Love
Bethan glanced at him once, then freed her hand from his grip. “You should spend your time thinking about the divorce instead.”
With that, she walked away without looking back.
Hugh stood frozen, watching her retreating figure with that same cold finality. Something twisted in his chest-a panic he couldn’t explain.
He leaned his full weight against the wall behind him, feeling like he couldn’t breathe.
Twenty years-they’d been childhood sweethearts for over twenty years. He couldn’t believe she felt nothing for him
anymore.
Hugh walked into the living room. “Jemma, don’t worry about dinner tonight. You can head home.”
Late that night, Mason looked for Hugh and found several empty bottles across the coffee table. Hugh was sprawled on the couch, clearly wasted.
Mason found a spot to sit down. “Well, this is a first. I’ve known you for years and I’ve never seen you drink yourself into this kind of mess.”

Hugh’s head was pounding. He struggled to sit up.

He’d wanted to drink himself senseless, but the more he drank,
the more awake he felt.
When Hugh didn’t respond, Mason pressed him. “You acknowledged Megan as your wife in public. Does that mean you’ve already decided to divorce Bethan?”
Hugh’s fingers froze around his cigarette.
He looked up at Mason. “Bethan told you?”
“I overheard Megan talking to Elsie at the bar tonight,” Mason said.
Hugh took a frustrated drag of his cigarette.
He spoke with exhaustion weighing down every word, “Hudson’s first day at that private school, he put another kid in the hospital. Megan got into it with the other parents, and when Jacob couldn’t handle it, I had to step in.”
Mason let out a long sigh. “Look, I get it. Megan and Hudson would be dead without you. You’re doing a good deed, saving lives and all that. Just get the divorce over with and go live your life with them.”

Hugh’s face went from bad to absolutely livid. His voice came out flat and bitter. “Calvin’s this hotshot international lawyer who strong-armed the school into expelling Hudson. Then at the hospital, he mistook Megan for my wife. I just went with it -figured if Calvin thought she was a Cavill, he’d agree to settle this quietly.”
Mason cut straight to the point. “Sure, you wanted to fix the mess. But what you really cared about was protecting Megan and Hudson’s reputation. You were scared Hudson would get called a bastard at school, that people would look down on him. Am I right?”
Hugh didn’t even try to deny it. “That’s what I promised Megan when she came back to the country.”
Mason’s eye started twitching-a sure sign he was pissed. “What about the promises you made to Bethan when you married her?”
He went on, “You stood there in front of Bethan and let Calvin think Megan was your wife. Where the hell does that leave her?”
Hugh’s composure finally started cracking. “She is my wife! She always has been!”
Mason wasn’t backing down. “Hugh, are you seriously still not getting this?”

Mason stood across the desk and pointed right at Hugh. “The reason you keep bending over backward for Megan and Hudson is because you’re banking on twenty-plus years of history with Bethan. You’re counting on the fact that she loves. you.”
He continued, “You know damn well that everything you’re doing for them is hurting her, but you do it anyway. That’s why you’re scared. That’s why you feel guilty. That’s why you won’t divorce Bethan-because you’re terrified that once you let her go, you’ll never get another chance. Hugh, people who trample on real love deserve the worst. Mark my words-Bethan will divorce you!”
*****
Long after Mason left, Hugh couldn’t pull himself out of his spiraling thoughts.
His mind felt completely stuck. Something was crushing his chest, making it hard to breathe.
When Bethan got back from Virginia, he would apologize properly. He would sit down and really talk to her.
No matter what it took, he had to get Bethan pregnant soon.
A baby was the most critical bond between husband and wife.
