Chapter 245 When You Get Back From Virginia

The moment Bethan’s office door clicked shut behind them, Hugh pulled her against his chest. She struggled in his arms, but he held her tight, refusing to let go.
His voice was muffled against her hair, thick with something that sounded like defeat. “Bethan, I’m sorry. I should have cleared things up with Megan right away. This is all my fault.”
Bethan struggled to pull away from him. “You knew it was wrong, but you did it anyway.”
Hugh’s voice was strained. “If I’d corrected everyone about my relationship with Megan right there, Hudson’s status as an illegitimate child would have spread through the entire school. He’s just a kid-he can’t handle that kind of scrutiny yet. Please, try to understand.”
Bethan yanked herself free from his grip and moved behind her desk, putting distance between them. “Well, congratulations, Hugh,” she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “You’ve finally admitted that Megan is your wife.”
Hugh’s eyes were bloodshot as he stared at her desperately. He shook his head frantically. “No, Bethan, that’s not what I meant! That’s not how I really feel!” ·

“Whether it’s how you really feel doesn’t matter anymore,” Bethan shot back. “What matters is that you just admitted, with your own mouth, that Megan is your wife. And you also said, with your own mouth, that you don’t want your son to be
labeled a bastard.”
Hugh’s eyes were red-rimmed as he kept shaking his head. “Bethan, please believe me-I’ve handled this situation. I promise it won’t happen again!”
Bethan’s expression went ice-cold. “Your promises are worthless to me.”
She crossed her arms. “Hudson is five or six years old, and he’s already being vicious to his classmates—both physically and verbally. As his father, you need to get him under control.”
Hugh walked around the desk and gripped Bethan’s shoulders with both hands.
He stared into her eyes, words forming and dying on his lips.
They stood there, face to face, close enough to feel each other’s breath.
“Hugh, at first I thought you just didn’t love me anymore,” Bethan said. “But after Megan and Hudson came back, you’ve been cold to me, undermining me at every turn, yet you won’t

let me go. I thought you were just being a jerk.”

She paused, her voice growing harder. “Mr. Locke is my friend. He saw how miserable I was and he was just trying to cheer me up. But you had his grandfather drag him back to Europe by force!
“You’re just as low as Megan,” Bethan spat. “You two deserve each other. Perfect match!”
“Stop it!” Hugh couldn’t bear how she looked at him—that angry, accusatory stare that cut right through him.
Bethan’s voice was steady, almost cold. “The hospital’s sending me to Virginia for training. I leave tonight.” She paused, letting that sink in. “I don’t have time to waste on this anymore, Hugh. Go find Megan. And I hope by the time I get back from Virginia, you’ll have made up your mind about our divorce.”
Hugh stumbled backward. His eyes were bloodshot when he said, “Bethan, I know you don’t want to see me right now. I’ll give you space to cool down. When you get back from Virginia, we can talk this through properly.”
Bethan stared at Hugh’s exhausted, pain-filled figure with cold resolve. There was nothing left in her eyes but finality.
Hugh walked out of the hospital, and Megan immediately
rushed over to him.

She studied his stormy expression carefully before asking tentatively, “Hugh, your wife isn’t angry, is she?”

Hugh stopped in his tracks. His face was stone-cold as he turned to Megan. “Look, I can help you for a while, but I can’t help you forever. Hudson’s only six years old and he’s already bullying classmates. What’s he gonna do when he grows up— commit actual crimes? You need to get serious about teaching him right from wrong.”
Megan immediately jumped to Hudson’s defense. “Hugh, don’t be so dramatic. He’s just a six-year-old-what does he really understand? Besides, it was his first day at a new school. The other kids were isolating him, so he got emotional and lashed out.”
Seeing Hugh’s face darken to a terrifying shade, Megan quickly added, “I know this whole thing caused you trouble. I’ll sit him down tonight and really set him straight. I promise nothing like this will happen again.”
Hugh was a complete mess inside-restless, agitated, his mind all over the place.
Before Megan could even finish talking, Hugh strode away without another word.
He didn’t go to the office. He went straight home.
